Very kind of you, Raymond.  I guess the main thing is having a goal, no matter how seemingly modest. If you make it you’re encouraged, and if not you still have something to shoot for.

I appreciate that, Carl! I’m really thrilled with the squat. My second attempt felt like a 100% effort and it was a leap of faith going into the hole, because 2/3 of the way down I felt like I might not get back up. It’s amazing how many thoughts flash through your head during a max squat (not all of which are positive). You gotta think of some positive come-backs real quick!

Thanks, Carl!

I’ve sort of made a promise to myself not to miss a squat due to depth, so I try to go a little deeper than legal. It really eats away at you to miss on depth and then be stuck with the sense you probably could have still stood up had you gone lower.

Bench

Going forward all sets will be performed with a 3-count pause. So in theory, any gym lift would be achievable in a meet with the lengthiest pause. I’ll also be doing a short pause at the top with the elbows locked. Because of the increased time under tension I’ll be doing less reps in general. But I’m also bumping up the volume with a little decrease in intensity for a nice change of pace.

Deadlift 

Starting an experiment today. Will be training mixed grip again to see if I can do so without any of the minor back pains I’d occasionally suffer. I’d prefer to train how I compete. If it doesn’t workout, no biggie, I’ll go back to double overhand with straps.
