Sybersnott
Taking a page from Roark..... On this day, December 12, 1905.... Arthur Saxon performed his greatest feat of strength. A one-hand slow press of 370 lbs. in Stuttgart, Germany. Not bad for a guy of 5'10" and a bodyweight of 200 pounds. The local "strongman" was allowed to test the weight and did so, but could NOT pull the weight above his knees using both hands. This date is strange in another way pointed out by Roark. It was also the same day Thomas Inch died in 1963. Inch was Saxon's best friend in the physical culture/show business.
Roark
Sybersnott, Yes, a bent press, which he got to arms length. Several sources say he did not stand erect, another source says he did.
Roark
Sybersnott, I offer you a cup of tea, and an apology. I did not read the references in my files about Saxon's 370/371 lb bent press, I just read my notation, and I had it backwards! Several sources say he did the lift! S&H Apr 1936 Harry Good credits it S&H Mar 1953 Paschall credits it Vol 2 of AHC Gaudreau says he failed that night due to influenza, and John Dawe checked years of the magazines of that time period but could find no record of a further attempt. Super Athletes: Willoughby credits it Iron Game: Webster credits it. In addition Saxon's unofficial 386 lb bent press is acknowledged by some of the historians above, and a mention is made that since Arthur frequently bent pressed his two brothers in an apparatus the total of which was about 370, there was no reasonable way to deny this way within Arthur's range. Tom Black
Perhaps a stout beer would be more appropriate, cheers!
