"Vageling" Ha...getting all technical on me. Judging by his videos, Chez may have to worry more about that than I. Heh.

Appreciate it Parris. He's completely aware that I both weight train and perform Isos.

While I was kind of surprised by his take on this, he's really a specialist in his field so I'll roll with it.

Today's workout was a mixed bag.

I awoke after 13 hours of sleep completely exhausted (heart thing). I briefly contemplated going back for another 3-4 hours, but I really wanted to get in a workout today.

Getting out of bed...my back was in fits, but since I could stand up straight...carry on.

As it turned out, I probably should have slept, but there is something to say about the mental side of training.

I had grandiose ideas about what I'd get done today...had to adjust quickly.

GNR (120lb) 17 total

BOR (145) 4 total (quit like a bitch...heart wasn't having it)

Bending (kink) My plan was to bend 8 bars to 50deg+.

P...hit-45d, hit 90d = 2hits (knuckles tearing, put on electrical tape on middle fingers)

P...hit-35d, hit 75d = 2hits (tape ripped, put 2 more layers on) Neither of first two bars felt "good"

Q...hit-10d, hit14d, hit 16d, hit 20d, hit 20d, hit 23d, hit 24d, hit 24d, hit 24d, hit 38d, hit 55d = 11 hits

This bar deserves some words. Back at my strongest, I could bend a Q in IMPs without much thinking. After my second hit only moved it 4d...I decided I wasn't giving up on this bar no matter what. While I don't recommend this attitude on every bar...occasionally if you decide it's life or death, I believe it makes you a much stronger bender mentally. Anyway, after I hit the bar three times earning a single degree...I decided to search my brain to see if I could determine what was going on. Yeah my back was bothering me, but it just didn't feel like that was the problem today. I thought about the kink on a Red. I've pretty much gotten to the point (even now) where I my first hit on a Red in IMPs will move it to 90deg. What was I doing then I'm not doing now?

It finally dawned on me that I've deliberately been emulating E.J. If you watch his vids...he's like a hydraulic press. He slowly moves into full power on a bar. I think he does this to avoid hurting himself (hes a very strong mofo) Although it hurts to admit, I'm no EJ. One of my bending strengths has been my ability to explode into a bar. So I decided to hit it with my older style and see what happens. Well...the same bar that withstood 3 hits without movement moved 14deg immediately (and pretty easily too).

I should mention that during this Q bend, the tape on my middle knuckles required two more layers, my right index finger tore open in the middle joint, ripped the callouses off both ring fingers on end joints and tore open both palms. I chalked the palms and ring fingers and wrapped the index finger. Thinking about it, had I been exploding from the go, the bar would be done in a few hits and I would have saved a lot of wear and tear.

P...hit-40d, hit-65d = 2 hits

P...hit-65d = 1 hit

P...hit-40d, hit-60d =2 hits

P...hit-65d = 1 hit

P...hit-65d = 1 hit

I really don't know what the right thing to do (stylewise), so I'll mull on it.

At this point (mostly from the Q), I'm pretty toast. Over the next few weeks I'll slowly transition into Q's until I'm doing 8 of them. I don't think the P has much to offer me other than focusing on technique. I will continue to bend them and try to focus on each and every hit. I may not get as efficient as Sean Cashman...but it's a worthy endeavor.

Off to my regular Cardiologist. Gonna be hooked up to a high tech holter monitor that sends info in real time to the Docs. I'll be wearing wires for a month. Sucks, but they may learn something that helps.

Phew!

Big day today. Not from a volume or weight perspective, but from the fact that I'm changing things up.

OHP...DB 50x2 held together (total 21)

DBB...DB 85's (4)

Heart laughed at me.

Bending (I was tired and tested poorly but wanted to try anyway)

P...(90d) 1 hit 100d, 1 hit 115d = 2 hits total

P...(75d) 1 hit 110d, 1 hit 120d = 2 hits total

Q...(55d) 1 hit 60d, 1 hit 60d = 2 hits total

Man...it's frightening how accurate biofeedback testing is. Couldn't bend for shit...no point in continuing.

I went inside. The wifey said my lips were blue and I looked gray. Then she said that I had "the will", but was setting myself up for failure if I simply ignored my condition. (paraphrasing) She also got on my case about this new exercise that's out now. It's called "walking". Apparently most of the world is into it. As much as I hate following the crowd, I'm gonna give it a try.

Sigh...so time to call another audible.

As much as I like the 4 day on 3 day off schedule, my heart's not handling it.

I'm going to start the more traditional Mon, Wed, Fri tomorrow. Additionally I'm only going to do a single push and a single pull exercise each of those days in addition to the bend break down. Exception...I will also do shrugs and Gold Nail Lever as a finisher on Friday. Here is my new basic outline.

Mon. Flys (push)/Bent Over Rows (pull), 8 x 8 3/8" bar kinks (to 50d ish)

Wed. Dumbbell Bench (push)/One Arm Rows (pull), 8 x 8 3/8" bar sweeps (to 120d ish)

Fri. Flys (push)/Bent Over Rows (pull), 8 x 8 3/8" bar crush (to 1 3/4"), shrugs, GNL, some gentle Double Underhand Isos (counter the GNL)

That's it. Hopefully the minimal exercises and day of rest in between (and the double on the weekend) will allow my heart the needed rest, yet still allow progress. Ideally I'd be bending 3 on 1 off, but that ain't happening. How's that Nickle Creek song go?

You don't have to move that mountain

Just help me Lord to climb it
You don't have to move that stumblin' block
Just show me the way around it

Not really religious, but I like the sentiment. Today is day one of the Amiodarone. Hope to heck the side effects are minimal.

You are one of the toughest guys around, Nate! I love your drive and will to keep getting stronger even with all that's happening with your heart health.

Thanks Ben...much appreciated. It won't happen overnight, but I'm gonna solve this puzzle.

Flys (DB 50s) 41 total

RBR (DB 50s) 23 total

Note...I'm calling it Reclined Bent Over Rows because I'm laying (face forward) on an incline bench to do them. Bent Over Rows were killing my back.

Shrugs (245) 30 total

RBOR (DB 50s) 23

Note: I'm laying on an incline bench to do bent over rows...the normal way was killing my back.

Shrugs

(245) 30 total

(210) 20 total

(160) 20 total

(120) 20 total

GNL (32) 60 sec total each hand

DUB Iso's 20 second gentle on Red nail

7 x P x 8 3/8" swept to 120deg

( I tossed the 60deg Q into the BLB...bend later box) Mentally I wanted to end this workout feeling good...didn't want to stress at all.

Hands should heal up by Monday.

Play with your stance. Wider, narrower, different angles, deep squat, arched back, rounded back, turn the feet in, turn one foot out etc.

ever since my lower back got jacked up I basically stay away from bent over barbell rows. they seem to bother me more than almost anything else. it may make sense to just pass on them completely.

Thanks man. Shockingly (for me) I did...and couldn't find anything that worked.

Yeah...I know you of all people feel my pain (literally). My experiment with laying front way on the incline seemed to have worked. I definitely can't give up on the motion...those upper back muscles need to be targeted for the Gold Nail.

Nate this just goes to show nothing is good all the time. Look for a contra motion for the lower back. Maybe barbell hip thrusts or something

Forced myself out of bed after 11 hours. Exhausted...just making sure I get up at all.

Dropped 16lbs of water yesterday with Lasix. The extra water was affecting the ticker.

RBOR (DB50s) 36 (pull)

DBB (85's) 18total (push)

Probably shouldn't have worked out at all...oh well.

Turns out I have a deep bruise under my recovering left palm tear. The blister was masking any discomfort from it.

See how hands are on Friday for bending.

Hopefully no one thinks I'm sitting on the couch eating bon-bons.

Definitely feeling all the new drugs. I may go throw up now. :)

Barfpics or it didn't happen.

Take it easy a bit steelslayer, you have time enough coming up, strength seems to stay there in your body, give your body a bit more time.

Decided to test the hands and bent a Red, crushed a P. Nahhhhhh not a bending day.

2 DU Red Iso's (wrist work)

DU isos are brutal! I never did a lot of "purposeful" DU isos because they really pounded my wrists and made them ache. I think they are very useful, if your wrists can take them.

Yah...I can feel it this a.m. These will be once a week maximum (if they are feeling right as rain by then).

Well...wasn't gonna mention it yet but I wobbled that Red on my second hit last week. :) I've no idea what my max DU is since I've never really trained it (besides the beginning of bending). Probably pretty close to the Red. I'm going to take it slow though (DU 1 x 7-10days). My wrists definitely haven't kept up with the rest of my strength training. I'd rather not hurt myself again. (cert night tried some DU and "popped" something...months recovering)

Oh man you really arnt one for boasting about your strength - I respect that. Hell yeah though that's world class!

Would adding in isos into my DU routine help? I have some triangle G8's to try it on.

I'm definitely not the resident DU expert around here but I think the general consensus is that the iso can help but you need to be really careful with them.

If you have a weak point (and in the case of DU it's almost always the wrists), that point will be first to give. With all the training we do, most of us have gotten strong enough to hurt ourselves...so take your time and build up to it.

OHP (DB50s held together) total 24

OAR (85's) total 68 (move up to 95's next wo)

Bending

6 x P x 8 3/8" IMP Sweep 2 hits a piece...all ending at 125-130.

Seems like this is where my knuckles meet up each time. Tis cool since 125 give me great interlock for the crush.

I believe I am harnessing and unloading power better now. This will be a long road but will be an awesome one.

Getting strong as shit. :rock
