Thanks man.  I'm second guessing myself constantly...but I do feel I'm moving forward.  I hate the waiting in between big efforts.  :)

Handslaps

Old batch Red in IMPs.

"P" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in IMPs.

Handslaps, knuckle mallets

That was my next to last "P".  It was surprisingly easier than yesterday's.   I think I dialed it in a little.

Almost time to step it up and focus on Q and R.  Baby steps.

Yup.  That's it.  I dropped my workout from today.  Extreme heart fatigue this morning.  Imagine the feeling of letting a big breath out super slowly.  Yeah its relaxing, but you cant really accomplish much while you're doing that.  I'm kinda walking around in that fatigue right now.

Additionally, I have a few massive callouses that are tearing underneath.  Example: my right index finger...

20200626_141457.thumb.jpg.961d50d24e56960f224457f9533b8e84.jpg

I tried electrical tape, then straight fabric bandaid, but to no avail...bearing down on it was an exercise in masochism.

Anyway...that was the last of the Ps.  Qs up to bat tomorrow.

I'm posting abnormally late...because I called it a day a short time ago.

Today's session was broken up into separate parts.

My hands need recovery so after handslaps (these dont cause tears) I started with a Red in IMPs.

Followed with a

"Q" 0-1 DR @8 3/8" in 1.5 IMPs till about 90degrees and finished it in singles.

Here's where things went south.  I grabbed an "R" and started in IMPs.  Went about 8-10 degrees and switched to 1.5s.  Went right to 18deg.

Here I stalled at 27deg.   I imagine I hit it 20 separate times before realizing it was going nowhere. (Not my brightest moment).  I had to take a break to tend to my father-in-law (Alzheimers). Hmmmm irony?

When I returned, I immediately moved it to 45deg before stalling again.  Trip to Costco followed.

Upon returning, I managed to move it to 63deg.  After 2,357 more hits (exactly), I admitted I was stalled again.

So...I consulted my steel spirt animal.  He asked if today was supposed to be about hand conditioning...or whether it was supposed to be a finished bend today.

My steel spirit animal made a lot of sense.  Today was supposed to be only about hand conditioning and familiarity with longer steel.  Me breaking from the plan is actually pulling me back from my goals.

So I'm back on the right path and won't go hard again till Wednesday.

Today was a perfect example of why one should not deviate (greatly) from a plan.  I'm not sure I've ever been this sore post bending.

Handslaps.

Red in IMPs.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1 IMPs.

The Q took a ridiculous amount of time.  Could not harness any power.  Glad I pushed through...but don't want to put myself in that position again.

Handslaps,

BW squats

Planks

Glute bridges

Red in IMPs.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5 IMPs/Single IMPs.

Q easier than yesterday. I'm still not recovered from that R attempt so I'm skipping weights today.  I did a quick count and found out I have 75+ bars at Q.  Should give me plenty of time to move forward.

Handslaps,

Glute bridges

Red in IMPs.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5 IMPs/Single IMPs.

FBBC package arrived!  Shitton of Bastards and 3 kinds of wraps.  It's so nice to see a 5/16" nail that won't tear up your pads.  For example...

20200630_152826.thumb.jpg.2e89ae17d131d6c7cd2dfb5213ca84cb.jpg

Anyway...I did a Bastard in IMPs for reference.  Significantly harder than current Red.  More like the Reds from '13 prior to the Spiral.

20200630_152329.thumb.jpg.c3b3ac271e0b454d01dad87732eeead8.jpg

I'm far from recovered, but the Q was somewhat easier than yesterday.   I'm starting to dial in my long bar technique.  That weird prebend ritual of goldnail benders isn't pointless at all.  It's a weird place to start a bend...even for a large guy.

Back is low key whack.  Not enough to cripple me, but enough to sap my strength.

Handslaps

Glute bridges

New Red in IMPs.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" with 1.5 IMPs, Singles, 1/3rds. x 2

Slapped 1/3rds on for the crush.  Damn DR is way more springy than CRS.

Training today reinforced my belief that this is gonna be a long journey.  Cardiologist tomorrow.

Mr. Cottrell braved the bridges and Philly traffic to come for a visit today.  The idea (accomplished), was to initiate his return to bending and find out exactly where he currently stands.  How'd it go?  Well.  But that's his story.

I started with a New Red in IMPs.

Followed with a DU 60d with a 48 minwrap on the pointy end.

Did an "L" and an "I" O-1 DR @ 7" both DU in IMPs.  Tweaked wrist on a "K"...which remained unfinished.

Bent a "Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" with leathers and 1/2 IMPs.

20200702_135321.thumb.jpg.b107bf4a93515444fb7363b0abe0714a.jpg

In the middle of this workout, my IM package arrived...woot!

20200702_140313.thumb.jpg.fafb97ea831d56aa4cd0a20557ff0990.jpg

My replacement Golds arrived.  I'm not ready for them, but just having them stare at me is motivational.

Bastard in IMPs. Much harder than the Red.

CNS was not rocking today.  Despite that the Q went down easier than ever.  That said...it's gonna be a while before I do it in singles.  Tis ok.  It's a journey, not a race.

Back was whack today.  CNS felt fried.  I cant guarantee I'll feel great on cert day either...so I did the work.

Handslaps.

New Red in IMPs. (Felt like a shiny...wtf?)

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1/.5 IMPs.

Gotta admit...I wanted to quit after the first hit, but I worked on my technique and managed to get it moving (slowly).

Today was my 40 bending session in a row (light and heavy).  Need to come to terms with the body variations of a 47 yo.  Happy 4th!

Back still messed up.

I really dont care today...cause I learned something crazy helpful.  I was watching Alexander's vids and picked up some things.

Anyway...

Red in IMPs...4 hits.

"Q" in 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1 IMPs.

Q went way easier with better technique.

It’s so helpful to watch other benders. I have learned so much by dissecting what good benders are doing. What did you pick up to incorporate in your bending? Your day to day consistency has been great.

I cant verbalize most of it until I have each piece down.  I can say that each time he attacks the bar at a different stage, its slightly different...both grip and actuation of power.  I hope to explain myself better soon.

Feeling good.  Nearly every hit fulfilled its purpose today.  It's really a paradigm shift for me.

Im realizing I used to simply overpower bars.  I've got a long ways to go, but my new approach is already yielding results. To sum up, I'm wrapping more carefully, placing my hands more thoughtfully for each hit, and preparing my body for each explosion of energy.

Red in IMPs...5 hits.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1 IMPs.

20200706_104425.thumb.jpg.5b63948fba16401dc1571c1ef503bad1.jpg

I'm sooo much less tired after this Q compared to others.  No surprise, there were a lot less hits.  Although I bent identical steel to many other sessions. I feel I got more out of this one than the others collectively.

A good day!  :)

Very pleased with today.  I was able to correct issues directly after bad hits.  Bending every day is allowing me to dial in better.

Red in IMPs.  4 hits.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1 IMPs.

20200707_104633.thumb.jpg.0f2c86b820b3ca94c7e1e899754372e4.jpg

I know this looks identical, but what I'm not detailing is how many hits I'm using the 1.5s and how many singles.  At this point I still need the 1.5s to get over the hump with the kink.  That said...I used to use them for much more than that.  I'm setting micro PRs daily.  It really helps keep me motivated.   I think a lot of us gloss over micro PRs because they aren't necessarily newsworthy...but they definitely add up.  :)

Today was interesting (to me anyway).

Red in IMPs.  I'm going to switch this warmup bar to Red in 2/3 IMPs going forward.  I just dont feel like the regular IMPs are helping me reach goals...even though it's a warmup bar.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1/.5 IMPs...x 4.

I was somewhat fatigued, but only stopped for diminished returns.  I need to conquer this bar completely in singles...but have yet to work out the kink in them.  It will come.

Attempted an "R" in 1.5 IMPs and managed 16 degrees.  Perhaps would do better fresh?

"I" DR (.272) @ 7" in IMPs...one DU, one Reverse.  I'll more to "K" down the Road.

20200708_125443.thumb.jpg.6da80fe046c5691f9e5e208090d45511.jpg

I'm not jubilant...but I keep honing in my technique and that makes my hits more effective.  So...I'm pleased at my progress.

I was a hurting pup this a.m...very sore.

Started with a Red in IMPs.  Spaced about the 2/3 wraps...good thing...cause that kink hurt...ouch!

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1 IMPs.  Felt good.  Becoming more automatic.  Using the 1.5s less and less.

Soon Cottrell came by to work some bending and camaraderie.  I did 2 "I" @ 7 "...one reverse and one DU.  I failed a DU "K" @ 7, then came back with a new one and killed it.  That's a DU PR (in IMPs).  Not bad for very little DU work.  I definitely plan on DUing a Red in IMPs down the road.

Tried to match that with a K reverse, but was too weak.  I'll come back to it.

I bent a 60d reverse with only a 24 minwrap on the point end.  Hands not 100%, but getting there.

20200709_122749.thumb.jpg.4fc53a7cc7806145c0a285228bfcd4cf.jpgIt was fun chatting and bending with Rich.  He was rebuffed with a reverse 60d, but came back and killed a new one to 65deg.  Solid.

I hate that I only bend once a day...it feels so good challenging myself.  Patience Nate-son.

Handslaps.

Red in IMPs

Red in 2/3 IMPs.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1 IMPs.  I only used the 1.5s for 2 hits...11-23 degrees and 23-37degrees.   It might seem a little anal retentive to measure each hit, but I need to know my sticking points so I can learn how to work through them.  Anyway...this is another micro PR.  The Q in singles only is on the horizon.

20200710_095716.thumb.jpg.04b341ea54a8233b4ae2faf20d32d249.jpg

I tried a DU bend but wrists felt tweaked.  I'm going to make sure I space out my DU bending.

Progress!

Back is whack.

Bw squats.

Glute bridges.

Handslaps.

Red in IMPs.

Ooow..wtf?  The entire nail seemed difficult.  My CNS had not woke up yet.

Red in 2/3 IMPs x 2

First 2/3 was easier than the first nail.  The second melted in like 6 seconds.  Adding a long term goal of reducing these wraps to almost nothing on the Red.  Not a major focus...but itll help condition the hands anyway.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1 IMPs.  I started out strong with singles...but froze up at 18 degrees.  I used the 1.5s to get to 33 degrees...then finished in singles.  I'm very slowly eliminating the need for 1.5s.  Some is getting stronger, a lot is improved technique.

Feeling a bit beat up.  Thankfully, I'm taking better care of my hands due to some advice. ;)

Got to 20 degrees in singles today. Pretty good but ripped off an index callous.  I used 1.5 for two hits to 48 degrees.  Finished in singles.  Took way longer than I wished.  Was under a time crunch and had to finish it off quickly.  Managed it...but it took a toll.  Any progress is progress.  Glad I bent today.

Hurt like freaking hell.  I guess my hands are banged up. They were pretty much telling me to stop bending today.  Bahahahahaha!  Silly hands.

Red in 2/3 IMPs.

Oddly enough...I felt only the tiniest fraction of discomfort on this one.  Lesson:  dont immediately abandon ship.

"Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in 1.5/1 IMPs.

Only got to 10 degrees in singles today.  I'm guessing my beat up hands had much to do with that. I used 1.5 for two hits to 45 degrees.  Finished in singles.  Going from 45 to finished was cake!  Technique is honed and I'm way stronger.

Just got to master one more piece of this puzzle.

That's just great planning.  I have written thousands of notations for sweep and crushdown training especially where I would track every single degree (or thousandths of inches) of movement I got on bars I was working on that were out of my ability to bend in one session.  A lot of times I would just write ISO if I got no movement at all.  I even noted the time beside it just so I could go back and see if huge amounts of rest in between worked or more normal 3-5 minute type rests were useful.

Micro PRs are just as important as big PRs in my mind.  They keep you fighting and putting in the work to reach the bigger milestones.
