anwnate
Saturday 9/15/18 "Anarchy at Anton's!" @Anton.Torrella Actually it was pretty organized...but alliteration is key to a good title. So yesterday was an epic griptogether. 6 New Jerseyians braved the city to join Anton and company in Queens. (Juliet, Matt, John, myself, and later Tim and Tim's buddy...err forgot his name) I was there for over 8 hours, not taking notes, so I'm only going to hit a few highlights I remember. Matt and John arrived first and helped Anton hump steel and set up the backyard. Juliet and I arrived next. I was starving so Anton hooked me up with a Ricotta, Almond Flour, Cinnamon, vanilla Concoction to keep me from breaking keto. Awhile later, we were joined by Anthony, Vinnie, Jose, Justin, Syria, Russian Mike, and Chez. Eventually Amanda showed, and later Tim and co. A number of people were hitting horseshoes. Here's @mkraenbring with a few he destroyed. Chez gave Vinnie a gripper setting clinic...which Vinnie said immediately helped a ton. While he was at it, Chez smashed a 194 Gripper for 4 reps! WTH??? A bunch of us started working up with the Axle. Immediately it felt hard and I was feeling all the Andrew's Axle I've been training lately. Even so, I was able to work up to 323lbs with a frozen monkey stance (stopped with arms above knees but not a legal lockout). I was pretty pleased, since this is a post surgeries PR for me. It was also a good indicator that this was gonna be a good day for me. I think Juliet pulled 178 or 190? Either would have been impressive. A number of people messed with Lucas's "Inch Pinch", but I didn't really follow it. Clarino and I had a brief conversation about "deep healing" and grippers. Most of my gains have come from long layoffs after hard work. Because nothing follows thickbar better than thickbar...we decided to break out the Napalm Nightmare. This is the very first time I attempted it and I drastically underestimated what I'd do on it. Eventually I pulled 307 with more in the tank. While that probably sucks as a weight class world number, it was strong for the venue on this particular day. We got the flask out and started pulling. I almost never train the flask (so far) but was feeling frisky today and joined the fray. Jose just barely missed 85...which is a significant portion of his body weight. I pulled it easily both hands...then missed 91.5 badly. I went back down to 88ish and hit it my PR. Anton was going to write it on "the PR Board" but I asked him to hold off. I bumped it back up to 91.5 and solidly pulled it. Made me feel good and positive about my new quest to pinch 2x45s. At this point I'm riding high. I believe my Legends training has been super productive so far. A lot of people worked the Moontop. I'm not sure about everyone's numbers but I know I failed on 39lbs for some reason. It's way under my PR but I wasn't responded well on that width yesterday. Pretty sure that Chez pulled something in the 40-45 range. One of the cool things they do in this NYC group is holds for time. They did a 4 wheel Axle hold and Matt Kraenbring had the day's record with 44 seconds...only to fall to Mike's 45 seconds later in the day. My first attempt was 35...my second 31. I wanted to do better but only the mind was willing at this point. Whiskey, Water and brews were flowing throughout the day. Eventually Anton fired the grill and made some fine marinated zucchini, chicken legs, corn and steak. Yummers and big thanks man! Juliet took a half 65 (31.7) hex in each hand and pinched them no problem. The she freakin cleaned one righty! I wasn't around to see if she ever got lefty, but she's crazy determined. Eventually people started leaving, it got dark and we put most of the stuff away. This is when Tim showed up with a bag of card decks, his 142 anvil and his 58k INCH. People started playing with the Anvil. There was a definite technique to getting that sucker off the ground. I'm pretty sure Vinnie got it and Tim well...manhandled it. In fact, he lifted the 58k and the anvil at the same time...with a long hold. That fired me up and I managed to copy the performance (less of a hold though). Tim put on a show tearing decks...in the boxes...and behind his back. Sick! It was getting late and Jose took it upon himself to teach Juliet how to rip a deck of cards...AND...bend a horseshoe. She ended up doing both! At this point, I was pretty beat and we heading back to South Jersey. The hospitality was second to none. What a great group of guys and just a ton of fun. Thanks to all of you guys for making such a fine memory.

I feel like I have experienced a similar effect with time off. From what I've heard, you and I are not alone in this. Not sure if you know, besides being a head case...I've had a number of heart issues and surgeries that have forced me off the playing field more than once. Coming back to grippers after long layoffs has proven beneficial. The last one of note brought my top end from a 162 to a 185. Now...I didn't do that the first session back...but way sooner that can be ascribed to recent work benefit. I like to call it "deep healing," as I believe that describes what is taking place. So much of grippers is dependent on programming. Some people have a real knack for timing their gripper workouts...but most don't. A lot of people who get frustrated are actually perpetually broken down...forgetting that recovery is what's actually building strength. I feel that the long layoff (after strong overload), is sort of the sovereign specific for grippers.

Soooooo...Straps went on. 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3 TV = 21 = 2562kg Felt good, no straining...gonna keep total reps around 20 per session. Feel like this is building my base strength. anwnate
9/18/18 I awoke hurting...feeling each and every one of my 46 years. Juliet dropped by and I prayed that deadlift and saxon tested badly. Not surprisingly...I was in luck. So while Juliet took on the Crusher and Flask, I searched for a few things to busy myself with. FrankenHub (22.75kg/50.05lbs) 3/3, 3/3, 3/3, 4/3, 3/3, 3/3, 2/2 TV = 21/20 = 41 = 932.75kg I had taken a moment before hitting the FrankenHub to get an idea where my max is. I'm beat up, but still managed 26.40kg and based my workout on that number. This implement is awesome. Zero tearing and zero issues post workout. I imagine it could become popular. Sledgehammer S2S (4lb) 4/4, 4/4, 4/4, 4/4, 4/4 TV = 20/20 = 40 = 160 GripTopz Gold Bar (22.75kg/50.05) 2/2, 2/2, 2/2, 2/2, 2/2, 2/1 TV = 11/12 = 23 = 523.25kg Haven't touched one of these in forever. I have no real idea what my max is, but was happy I could do multiples with the weight from the FrankenHub. It was testing really well...which was my goal for the day anyway. Sledgehammer FL (6lbs) 3/3, 3/3, 3/3, 3/3 TV = 12/12 = 24 = 144lbs Even though Juliet just wore herself out on the flask, I insisted she attempt 2x25...then 2x25x2...just to get it on video. She didn't think she could do it...funny that. I honestly don't think she is far from a pair of 35's (right handed anyway), but I currently only own a particularly wide pair. I'll have to pick up a narrower pair of 35s and harass her to work on it.

anwnate
9/19/18 Worked on Christmas Village...shoulda done grip. 9/20/18 Matt, John and Juliet came by last evening. I was looking forward to finding my max on the Saxon Bar. This was the first time I ever pulled on a Saxon. Aaron had said that 240-250 is "good" and that he does 290. I was simply hoping to hell I broke 200! I worked myself up to 92kg/202.8lbs before dropping down to 74kg for a workout. I'm convinced I am going to work myself into "good" territory while training for legends...but am not limiting myself to that. All and all, I'm happy enough with my first Saxon day. Saxon Bar 74kg 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4 TV = 29 = 2146kg Miscellaneous blob fails 2x45 2hand holds
