OLD Qualification List For North American Championship

Jedd Johnson

Recommended Posts

Several of us have been working on developing an updated list of qualifications for our US Nationals / North American Championship based upon the weight classes introduced this year.

Also, we expanded the events that would count for qualification as well as the wild card feats.

Aside from myself, Brent Barbe, Chris Rice, Matt Cannon and Sean Dockery contributed to the list in various ways, and there may have been others that I am not aware of.

Thanks to those who assisted.

I welcome any questions you might have regarding the list.

Thanks,

Jedd

Notes:

Video submission for lifts will be accepted, and youtube video links can be sent to Andrew Durniat and Jedd Johnson for review.  In addition, many of these standards are not directly tracked, so the athlete is asked to notify Andrew Durniat, Jedd Johnson, or another NAGS committee member once they attain these goals.

The above lifts are a starting point. If you are promoting a competition please contact us so that qualifying standards can be established ahead of time.

Breaking of a US Record must happen in a competition format.

Once you have qualified for and competed in NAGS Championships you will automatically be qualified for the following year.

*Jedd edited some things: 9/30/12. Had a date wrong and added video submission permitted near the top of the document as well.

Thanks for getting this done early so that clear goals can be set for the next year.

One question: Can you elaborate on the video submissions? Does this mean that you can video yourself performing three of the feats in Qualification Chance #2, and these could be done outside of a NAGS-sanctioned contest?

yes, the 3 lifts from section 2 can be submitted by video as well as comp lifts. after discussion it was decided we'd give this a try. people are busy, can't always travel, etc. also, as Andrew Durniat said to me while discussing it,"let them fake a lift. they can show up and look stupid while I use the money for prizes."

so, we'll be trying it out to see how the video submissions work.

get after it, get qualified, compete with the best in the country. very simple.

Awesome work guys. That looks great.

This may have been covered elsewhere but how do women qualify for Nats? Is it auto qual if they compete in a santioned grip event?

Well it would appear I qualify then. I'll see you all at the next nationals as a competitor again.

you will have to make the lifts in a comp, get the certs, or submit by video. just to be clear.

women do not have qualifiying standards since the field is so small.

I think this was a smart move for the long haul, but I am curious- Was there anyone who was prepared to show up and lift who was not qualified, who spoke up?

there were a couple of people who said the were trying to get in during the immediate period leading up. also, if you knew you couldn't make those lifts because you weight 148# you might not have even spoken up. hopefully getting these standards out now, as well as accepting video submissions, will drive attendance for next year.

here are 2 suggestions made after jedd said he was surprised by the lack of people who said they were going to compete at nationals:

snapback.pngChez, on 29 May 2012 - 02:09 PM, said:

maybe think about lowering the qualifying lifts that can be submitted via video. Might be some people who want to go but just can't qualify. Just an idea.

(my response was) or have qualifying tiers based on weight classes. some of the qualifying lifts are relatively easy for a 120+ guy verse a 73k guy.

Appears they definitely listened. Where are nationals next year?

awesome. with a year to work you should have no trouble bringing up enough lifts to get qualified. you will not regret going.

something to keep in mind is that within a very short time we have gone from no nationals to a recognized national championship. no devisions to the open and elite splits. no weight classes to 8 different weight classes. no qualifications needed for nats to qualifing required.

a lot of work done in a very small amount of time. with all of that in mind we made need to tweak things as we go. for instance, we really have no data on lighter weight lifters compared to the heavies. this will change over time and will probably require us to massage some things as we go. patience ans suggestions will help keep things progressing as smoothly as they have been.

In Qualification Chance #2:

Is the grade 5 x 6" hex bolt a 1/4" bolt? What kind of pads are allowed? DO, DU, and Reverse are all allowed, I assume?

Yes, 1/4 inch Grade 5. Wraps have not been decided. The standard is tight wrap passed through a 1.25-inch hole for suede. I would go with that.

Sorry If I'm still not understanding but can it be any bending style as Jchap was asking?
