Roark
John Grimek died Nov 20, 1998. We will never see his like again. Wonderful physique, and he trained on some ofthe oldtime lifts, and could match many of them. Knowing that Arthur Saxon was credited with getting over 400 to the shoulder in the bent press, John tried it again and again, and could get the weight to his shoulder, and could screw himself down into position, but could not rise with the bell. Incredible grip! Jan, who works at York, and who for years worked on Muscular Development mag with John, would chat with John each morning before work began, and John would tell stories about the history of the sport. (if you could see me now you would wonder why my complexion is bright green) Occasionally Jan will write to me and relate some stories, and I have URGED Jan to write some of these stories because he probably knows more fun details about the man we called 'the glow' than does anyone. Roark
Not yet, Arne. September 11th caused some mail slowing. I mailed something first class to Australia, and it took a month! Am eager to see the letter.
Sybersnott
John Grimek might go down in history as the greatest bodybuilder ever. He might be gone.... but he'll never be forgotten. Thanks, Roark!
Guest tomykelly
When I started lifting weights in 1965 at 15 years old my hero was John Grimek and still is .I read all the articals by him and on him in the York Mags .In the 1972 I went to the first World Powerlifting Championships and got to meet him .He was in his 60's then and looked amazing ! He looked alot bigger in person then in his pictures .Shaking hands with him I 'll never forget it was like putting your hands in a vice he didn;t crush my hand thank God .Couple years later I called him and we talked for a hour on training mostly his love for squats . He said he remember me but I think he was just being kind .He was a very nice guy . Pat
