#3 For Reps

As a sidenote, I thought I'd mention that my max gripper close did not improve at all when I worked up from 6 reps to 12 reps on that easy #3.5 within one week. What happened was the opposite.

I hardly ever train reps on grippers. In fact, never would be more accurate. Remember that max strength and speed are closely related and you could hardly call any of the reps of a 10 rep set explosive. I seriously doubt I would gain anything if I ever chose to work up the reps with that easy #3.5. As a matter of fact I doubt I would get even 10 reps now with that same gripper, but I don't care as the max improves.

I have to admit though that it makes a cool video when you rep #3's or harder grippers. :)

Have faith,Tommy

That's very interesting. I found that I made gains from doing almost any kind of grip work including training for reps. More reps on the hg250 = more reps for the 300 which enabled me to build the strength needed to close an easy hg400. I always did max singles first, but then I worked down through the lighter grippers until I was done. Should I maybe have devoted more effort to singles instead or forced negatives? I used to do very heavy negative holds with the hg400 before I could close it. I'm really not sure if that's what helped me or if it was the sets with lighter grippers. I was under the impression they both sort of contributed,, but I really don't know for sure.

Tried something a lttle different today based on what Teemu said above. Did a series of singles on my #3. Started an online stopwatch and did a close every minute. Got 23 and missed on 24 by 2mm. Lost some skin and my hand and forearm is fried, but was worth it just to see how many I could do. Goal was 20. I know it doesn't count for this contest obviously, but I was still pretty pumped.

Okay, gave the singles thing a go. Got 52 singles in 23 minutes. Had to stop cuz the blisters.

Result:

http://www.gripboard.com/index.php?autocom...si&img=9000

Also got a nice, deep blister on my left index finger from setting it so many times.

I would get it on video, but it would be way too long to put on Youtube.

Awesome job Frank. And, um, er, sick dedication. :whacked Although I shouldn't talk. I had to superglue two skin tears after my 23 singles. Great job bro! Way to make me look weak... again!

Lol, thanks Mike :laugh I ended up just cutting the skin off...couldn't find any superglue. Hope it doesn't affect my other lifting.

Definitely giving the singles thing a go! I'll be expecting a very high number (i'm thinking 100 in an hour will be possible) because i have done this sort of training before, while at work. I've done over 100 before in an hour but these were multiple sets of 6-8 parallel reps.

That would be awesome bro! I would have some super glue handy for 100 :laugh

Yeah, I feel like the main thing that stops you is the blisters...they're nasty. I had more closes in me, but the skin was getting more and more torn up with every rep.

Btw, Mike, I think Tommy's #3 reps should be moved up the list since they were all wide-set, and the rest are all parallel reps.

Not me, I just failed! :cry Although there was a skin tear that needed some superglue attention afterward. ;)

Awesome job Tommy! :rock I will add you to the list next update.

As for the wide or shallow reps, I agree Tommy's wide reps were more impressive (especially since that was his second set of 10 :bow ), however, there really isn't any way to account for this as this is just most reps (at least parallel). I will just keep the rankings as is but note in the list that Tommy's were wide reps unless somebody can think of a better way to do it.

From updating the coin challenge I've found this is best--basically just a footnote that the gripper was filed or no set was used, etc. It's a big can of worms to do it any other way. Tommy could always try again with parallel reps and possibly get a higher number.

I'll start it off. Thought I got 5, but when I went frame by frame on the original video, only the 1st 4 touched.

I would love to see what some of the big closers on here can do. I'm betting someone can put up double digits. GO!!!

Hello Mike.

Very strong grip! Have you tried CoC #3.5?

Thanks and yes. I've closed my 3.5 about 7 or 8 times but not consistently. Right now it is giving me fits. For some reason it started binding up really bad after I oiled it. It seems to be working itself free again, so hopefully I can get to a point where I can close it consistently.
