Had some time this morning and did a little benchin for the first time in 6 weeks.  Lost some strength for sure, but was able to do 185 for a 5x5 without having to completely grind the 25th rep.  Yates rows, followed by 3 hours of yardio.  Happy 4th everyone!

Physical therapy for my hip this morning.  She lulled me into a false sense of security with some stretching and a nice deep quad massage, then turned into Josef Mengele and tortured me for 30 minutes.

Band press downs: 5 step drop set of 5 reps each.

Hip update:

X-ray guided cortisone shot did nothing

Physical therapy made it worse, but did let them figure out that I probably have a torn labrum in addition to the bad arthritis

Went to doc today.  Canceled PT going forward and scheduled me for an MRI next Thursday.  Doing a 3T MRI to get a good look at the cartilage and confirm whether I have the torn labrum.  Unfortunately my company went to high deductible / out of pocket insurance plans, so the mri is another $800 on top of all the doctor and pt costs.

Then I meet with the surgeon to determine if it makes sense to try arthroscopic surgery to repair the torn labrum or if they just do the hip replacement because the cartilage is too much of a mess.

So no good news.  Looks like surgery of one sort or the other is only remedy left.  Unfortunately my company made me use all my pto during covid slow times and I decided not to pay for the short term disability plan this year at work.  So if they have to replace it, I'm going to have to grit my teeth and try to make it until January or I'm screwed.  Have tried celebrex, ibu, tylenol and naproxen.  Almost no relief if any.  Maybe some placebo effect.  🤷‍♂️

Anyway, hoping they can fix it with arthroscopy.  Would only miss a week or two of work.  If they replace it, I'm out 6-8 weeks with no pay.  Fun fun fun.

To say I'm depressed would be an understatement.

Thanks Nate.  Sucks bawls.  Back of my mind, I wonder if years of bending shoes right on that spot every day was a factor.  Probably not, but it has crossed my mind.

Dang man. I’m sorry to hear that. Have you heard of prolotherapy? Might work and be a lot cheaper.

Haven't discussed prolotherapy, but he did say that PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections could be an option.  But they run about $2k a pop and are not covered at all by insurance because they are still experimental.

Basically, this whole thing has been prolotherapy.   My a$$hole prolapses every time I get a bill because they're dang sure not using any lube.  Not even a complimentary reach around.  😳

Man hip pain stinks.

Now before I give you medical advice you should know that my medical credentials include daydreaming all the time about being a highly regarded Mayo Clinic osteopath.

About six years ago or so I had hip pain that limited the time I could spend driving and I had to skip two canyon trips because I couldn't hike without pain. I thought I needed a new hip for sure. It's gone for the most part now except when I rotate into my left hip. The things I do that might be helping manage the pain are two hand kettlebell swings, wide stance iso squats (like I'm catching but wider), and roll hamstrings and glutes with a rumble roller. None of those activities hurt while I was doing them.

None of that will cure tears or arthritis, though it might also do nothing to help. But, maybe it will a little.

Yea, for the last couple months I have tried rolling, stretching, deep tissue massage, strengthening exercises for hip muscles, several pt sessions, and even mumbo jumbo voodoo hoodo cupping.  It just gets worse every day now, no matter what I do.  The x-ray shows bad arthritis, but we'll have a much clearer picture after the mri.  This doc is one of the best hip specialists in Maryland.  Works with the Ravens.  He's trying everything to save my original parts since I'm relatively young.  Hopefully just a scope to fix labrum will buy me a decade.  Given my genetics, that's probably more than I'll need. 😱

Just weird that it bothered me for 15 years but wasn't horrible.  Then suddenly it fell off the cliff almost overnight.

Did you discuss the resurfacing procedure? I've heard that can buy some time as well.
