The Blob Challenge

Jedd, The 53Lb. 10 oz monster you have is a bit shy of the certified Us Post office weight we got on the other half of the Fatman Original Blob it was exactly 53lb 13.60 0z (53.85lb) I often wondered just how much over York casted some of the old ones. Bob Hoffman owner of York Barbell often said at York sponsored meets "We always give you a bit extra"....I guess he meant it! I have never weighed a York Blob made from an old 100 that weighed under 50 either.RS

In 2004 my blob was lost in transit from the GNC Show of Strength in Atlanta and the Mr. Olympia in Vegas 2 weeks later. Imagine my shock when our booth setup guy told me it was lost but he found a replacement but it was grey and didn't look the same. I figured they had a hex head or something. Turns out my GNC contacts knew enough to call Randall Strossen at Ironmind to have him overnight a blob. Little did they know this isn't an off the shelf piece. Luckily Randy had a blob Richard Sorin had sent him many years back with the inscription "What man can lift me" on the side. I came into the show way overtrained from the GNC show two weeks before with some bad tendonitis. Now I had this monster blob instead of the one I was used to. I lifted the blob all weekend long like normal and it was hard every time. After this debate about "Fatman" blobs started up I wanted to get this blob documented. Randy just emailed me the results - 53.6lbs and of the fat variety - convex on both sides - no "easy" side.

Richard, after looking at your videos you will need to show the Blob and added weight clearly in order to qualify for this list. Obviously you should have no problem re-doing it judging by how easy it looked, so go out there and add even more weight to supplant Wade on top of the list ;)

C'mon guys lets get the big lifts rolling, this is getting boring :D

I think Richard's evidence is as good as anyones for the 74.25lb lift. He also lifts 71 on this video which clearly shows the weights and weighing the plates:

Actually Wade neither of those is good now that I look back at them.

11. Lift must have a controlled descent.

Even if he had shown the weights on video for the 74 lift (he didn't), he didn't lower it under control. Very clearly he could of by how long he held it at the top but I am not going to infer anything for this list, especially not for the #2 spot. And the 71 was clearly a drop at the top of the lift.

Just found a lift of Richard's with controlled descent and weighing, and a lift of House's (real name?)

Just realized reviewing the videos Rex assisted slightly on the way down with the other hand. I will wait for more opinions on this but even though it is clear he is capable of this and more it will be DQd if you guys agree.

I do that all the time. I just don't want to drop whatever it is I'm lifting on my floor. I'd say good.

Mind if I try my hand at this? Or is a set list of contestants?

There's no way I'm paying $500+ to get one-half of a york to make some people feel better about it.

You live near enough to a few blobs, bro. Going and training with people brutally stronger than you is good for you anyway.

Yeah, me too. I do it on the way up for the same reason ;)

Also, I hate to bring up another semantical bickering point, but I gotta throw it out there; Does it matter if the attached plates are in contact with the ground? Seems to me that if the plates dragged off the ground after the blob itself cleared it may decrease/increase the degree of difficulty... progressive loading or whatever.

(That question pisses me off as I write it... ugh)

I wondered that my self it does let you get a head start with a lighter load.I plan on getting in on this challenge when I pick up a good scale to cal my blob and plates.

Matt anyone can join, this is completely open.

Ok if you guys say good lift I'll go with it, but it still must be lowered under your own power, no dropping of any kind.

That is a damn good question, and you guys are right that it would be somewhat easier HOWEVER since it is nearly impossible to get bigger plates (10+) to not be touching the ground I will say they are allowed to be in contact with the ground as long as they are not more then touching at the point of contact. In other words if anything more then a small area is contacting the ground t will be DQd. Input on this point?

can't they be bungie strapped to the bottom so it all comes up as one unit? I thought this was how Wade used to do it (haven't been able to view his new vid for some reason?)?

I think it should be allowed as well and small area being the edge of the plate.

Yes, but it makes it significantly harder because you can't tilt the Blob and it's harder to maneuver. His newest one uses a wire or strap of some sort.

That's an amazing lift, but I do believe it clearly violates Rule 11: Lift must have a controlled descent. I'm sure there is a lighter lift somewhere that would qualify, so Jedd or someone else if you want to post it I'll throw it up here (couldn't find it on your youtube if there is one). Jedd you also didn't show the plates or Blob for future reference (I know this wasn't for any list or challenge at the time), even though it was clear there were 2-5s on each side.
