Biometrics - Forearm To Wrist Size Vs. Gripper Closed

Guest Bonzi

Recommended Posts

There was a thread ranking grippers a couple of years ago at http://www.gripboard.com/index.php?showtopic=11754.

I thought about adding a column with the chart ranking of each gripper closed per person.

Any input about the rankings on this list as to placement? It at least will give new

folk a basis of what the grippers represent.

'nuther P.S. What do y'all think about adding a column with the type set used to close

your max gripper?

Both of these sound good.

The size of your wrist will increase with training - especially levering. You should sort all of this by max gripper close and see what patterns develop in regards to hand, wrist and forearm size.

If you have the hand and wrist measurements that the stronger grippers have, you can gauge where you will naturally progress to, with increased training. That doesn't mean that someone with small wrists and hands cannot achieve the same grippers. It might just mean more work.

StalwartSentinel wanted to see how forearms correlate to gripper closed, so here goes. This will

be a one time sort then back to the original, unless there is a member groundswell for a different

sort. Other recommendations have been made to add additional parameters to our list, but I am out

of room. You will notice that the gripper closed ranking is in the last column and the list is sorted using

this variable.

Please, for standardization purposes, use:

  • actual waist size at largest circumference and not pant size
  • forearm measured with arm straight and wrist not cranked(fist clenched is OK)UPDATE, let's use a relaxed forearm
  • hand size measured from first crease of wrist to then end of middle finger
  • We also have to make sure it's standarized. I.E. palm is considered first crease of wrist to first crease in middle
finger and finger length is considered first crease in middle finger to the end of the middle finger. thanks to
    superfeemiman for this standard
  • P = Palm Measurement
  • F = Middle Finger Measurement
  • H = Hand Measurement
  • See Post 72 in this thread for gripper rankings and poundages to close
  • The last column is the ranking of the strongest gripper closed(If there were multiple grippers as per the COC #1 and COC #3, I used the later version.)

Some of the folk at the bottom of this sort are the ones that I was referring to in a previous post. Check

the Forearm to wrist ratios and those are the ones I said could be bullets ready to take off under the

right training program. So, those at the bottom, of which I am one, just keep on keepin' on and

make yourselves stronger and persevere. You will get there with the right attitude. :mosher

BTW, StalwartSentinel, you said that the wrist measurements will increase with training. What increases

have you seen with your grip training for the wrist and forearm?

I've been training grip fairly consistantly since late 2001/early 2002 and have noticed very little difference in wrist size (maybe a hair) since then. Forearm size, dunno, as I never measured anything back then - but nothing to make a noticable difference size-wise. I have noticed certain muscles sticking out more than they used to though. I was lifting weights long before I started grip training and probably developed my forearms to where they're at now, so grip training probably didnt do much. A person who hasn't been weight training much may see a bigger difference though with the grip training (for size).

Hi All,

I've be training for 20 plus years mainly for muscle endurance due to my military background. Only just taken the "Grip bug by the horns" recently.

I find this thread great I just thought I would mention what for years 'the so called experts say' & that is that your wrist size is one of the few parts of your body that does not change. It is one of the key measurements to determine your full size potential when trying to build muscle.

I googled the following "wrist size bodybuilding" here are a few of the results (They are all for body calculators):

http://www.fitnesspros.com/calculators/ide...asurements.html

http://www.liftforlife.com/FitnessCalculat...%20Measurements

http://www.trulyhuge.com/fitnesscalculators.htm

There are a few sites that mention frame size in relation to wrist the results are:

Small = wrist size 5.5" to 6.5"

Medium = wrist size 6.5" to 7.5"

Large = wrist size over 7.5"

Any thoughts on the above.

Cheers

busamad

....'the so called experts say' & that is that your wrist size is one of the few parts of your body that does not change...

I'm a gonna have to respectfully disagree with you, busamad. Since I have been levering, chairs mostly

at all angles, my wrists have increased from a 7(very tightly pulled tape of 6.5) to a consistent,

tightly pulled tape of 7+ a 32nd or so. I just started levering in this way during the last couple of weeks.

It looks like our responses for our data pool have slowed down. Maybe we have reached

everybody that we could. I hope not and maybe they will start again, but if they don't

maybe the moderators could provide a stat sheet for people to fill out and place it on the board

somewhere where members could compare and crunch numbers as they progress.

As a point of reference, look at the top guys in the lastest list sorted by hardest

gripper closed. Four of the top five had wrists measuring 8 or more inches.

Were they all born grip kings or does it just come relatively easier than with a guy with a 6 inch wrist?

Just a little more food for thought.

I was thinking the same thing!

Finger: 3.14''

F/H: 0.410

As an addendum to my last post, I believe that some of the wrist size at the top

of our ranked list came from hours of intense training on the forearm and wrist

muscles/tendons to achieve the levels that they have achieved.

If some of these members could share some before and after wrist measurements

then we could draw some founded conclusions.

Anywho, from my excel spreadsheet:

Top 5 average 7.85 inches

Top 10 average 7.48 inches

All entered average 7.21 inches

I still say that wrist size can be increased and I'm getting hooked on chair levering. :mosher

Maybe a 2D:4D digit ratio column would reveal finger size relevancy, after all?

Considering the shape of TSGs and how it's closed spring pointed north, any digit ratio trends might be exponentially higher in this particular sporting event.

I get 1:1 on my ruler for 2D:4D, measured from the first crease up along the center of the finger; which according to prevalent digit ratio speculation means I should be a sissy-boy, and probably looking for something to bridge the CoC Sport and Trainer.

When I was a senior in high school, I measured my wrists at 7" (we did this for body frame ananlysis in health class). I was at the time as tall as I am now, but weighed only 170lbs. I never measured my wrists again until this topic came up, ans was surprised to find them 7 3/8" with the tape pulled tight. Perhaps you may say it does not count since I was only a teenager the first time, but I know for sure my wrists did increase in size in the last 7 or 8 years.

Bonzi, if you're updating that chart, I closed an older (non-GR8) COC#2 yesterday from a set.

A recommendation of 2D:4D ratio has been made but it looks like it would be too hard to get an

accurate measurement. Maybe later, but keep the suggestions coming along with any updates to

your stats.

Thanks to The Writer, there is data supporting my thesis concerning wrist size not being static.

So far two members have said that you will/can see gains. StalwartSentinel was the other.

I WILL find room for this data and hope more will be forthcoming. Thanks

P.S. I better crank my grip training up a notch or I will be the only one not yet closing

a #2. I think I will leave this sort as the default for now unless y'all want

it different. I don't mind being at the bottom. It can be very motivating.:mosher

Why do you think it looks hard to get useful measurements of these finger, as opposed to the middle finger which is already in the stats?

I didn't say useful, I said accurate. Maybe it's just me but

my ring finger seems to be at most 1/16th inch longer than my second

finger. Do some of you others see a big difference in yours and should we

try to add it?

OK. I know you said accurate; not to roll this OT into semantics, but we're not going to find accurate measurements of anything on our bodies; such are the technical and fluctual limitations. Rather we're looking at adequately precise, useful numbers.

The difference between ring- and indexfinger length can be large enough to discern at a glance. I don't know where the bell curve slopes for these stats, but it's not give or take a single percent or two. Certainly, add a 2d:4d column if you find it interesting; I'm just saying there's no practical reason it couldn't be done satisfactory, and it might be a more or less significant factor for predicting gripper potential.

Very interesting thread. It would be nice to find out the biometrics of the #4 closers and those who are close (Big Tex Henderson). Maybe some already certified COC#3 people could chime in too.

I don't know the actual start measurement of my wrist was but I will say that it is almost impossible to buy a watch off the rack, since I started heavy gripping and sledge levering a few years ago.

The tendons mostly, will thicken with increased workouts. The bones of the wrist are pretty much static however, their density will increase with increased loads (this is where I took my measurement). Up from that, toward the elbow, there is an increase of muscle on the top and bottom of your wrist.

While looking at your wrist, try clenching your fist, then open your hand and aggressively spread your fingers and watch what happens. The wrist area changes circumference. Now put your other hand around your wrist and repeat. You will feel where the expansion takes place. :upsidedwn

I just received a question concerning the difference in the old and

newer COC #2s. Any input from y'all. The rankings chart does

not give a second figure for the GR8 model.

Some have asked to add additional columns to the chart but any

additional columns would scroll onto a second line, so we

are maxed out.

Since I know that y'all in jolly ole England and beyond still use

the antiquated metric system :mosher, but maybe you can

convert to God's system(i.e. The American Way)

for the measurements. :laugh

BTW, I predict a Ryder Cup of Grip in the near future which

will be carried live on the Grip Channel. :mosher

You really have to treat old and new grippers the same. The only way to standardize grippers would be to collect this data for the folks on the Mash Monster cert list only. They've all closed the same grippers.

It's a wrap, folks. I will no longer maintain this list but feel free to use it

in other posts if you want or to start a new collection using it as a template.

I think it at least got some discussion started.

P.S. I hope that those of you, that have mentioned that it might

be a good idea to have a pinned version, in some form, where

members could update their stats as they progress, will mail the mods

and make your wishes known. Since it had around 1100 hits/100 posts in a couple of days,

there is definite interest.
