Roark
Those interested in the history of strength should pause today to acknowledge Roger Eells who died Nov 6, 1962 at age 53. Though at the time of his death he was a minister, he had in Feb 1940 started publishing his own, glossy paged magazine titled VIM. It ended in June 1941 after 17 issues, but the body of work presented is worth a collector's search Articles by Hise as well as Eells show the fledgling status of lifting/bodybuilding at the time. The issues of VIM that will concern grip board members would be Oct 1940 thru May 1941 when Leo Gaudreau ran his 8 part series on "Famous Stongmen of France". I spoke to Eells' only child, daughter Gayla in March 2001. She told me that her parents are buried in either Lisbon, Ohio or Rogers, Ohio at the Mt. Carmel cemetery(should could not recall which city it was actually in). So anyone on the board who can help? Their flat stone is on the Elliott lot at the cemetery. About the only other connection with grip was that Eells on March 25, 1938 tried 14 times unsuccessfully to lift the Cyr dumbell overhead. Of course, anything written by Leo Gaudreau is worth your search.
