The Shovel Lift?

Isn't it a plow lift without the end of the bar positioned on the thigh?

You just use one hand as a fulcrum and the other as the force arm, at the end of the bar.

If we have time, maybe we'll shoot some footage of it today.

Hah! I just brought this up in Goerner Forum under "uneven squats"

I seem to recall a picture somewhere on http://www.sandowplus.co.uk/ showing the shovel lift.

Simple really, It's pretty much an unevenly weighted deadlift, so that the bar would feel like you're picking up a shovel filled with something heavy.

I've used this as a core condtioner by picking up the barbell shovel style then twisting in the direction of the forward hand 90 degrees,i.e. left hand forward - twist to the left; switching hands and direction each set.

I do it with one hand palm down on the end of the bar (or sleeve if an O-bar) held just outside the same side hip/thigh (right arm by right hip or left by left) and the other hand with palm up about 2 feet further down the bar. Both arms are straight, pushing down with the back hand and pulling up with the front one, while keeping the shoulders down. Of course the closer the front hand is to the back one at the end of the bar, the more difficult the lift is on the grip.

To be clear, I only put weight on the far end of the bar.

speaking of shovel lift, I just spent 2hrs performing it, after we got hit with a blizarrd leaving about 10" of snow topped with feezing rain. so the shovel lift has pissed me off.

The "Shovel Lift" is described by Steve Justa in his book "Rock, Iron, Steel" sold by IM.

It's a great lower-back strengthener, but if worked with too heavy weight by a beginner, it'll probably cause back problems :D
