Roark
John Brookfield, grip master, is celebrating his 43rd birthday today [Jan 14, 1959]. So if you see him today, shake his hand. Carefully. We can only imagine what pieces of metal will be bent into letters today in celebration, or the front ends of which small cars will be Weaver Sticked. Even at this point John will have a solid place in hand-strength-history, and who knows what's 'around the bend' for his future. 1
RiotGrip
Roark, thanks for the tidbit, it is a bit intriguing to find that I have the same birthday as one of grip's all time greats!
Roark
RiotGrip, Unfortunately not too many board members are taking advantage of the birthday calendar Wannagrip has in place, but happy birthday!
Guest danreeves
How close is Mr. Brookfield getting to conquering the #4 COC or is it something he is actively pursuing? And has he ever written anything on his technique for bending horseshoes. I'm a long from attempting one, but its one my "dream list" of things to accomplish. Roark
When I spoke to John a few weeks ago in regard to Richard Sorin's 621 gripper, John told me he does not work much with the grippers. I don't remember the quote, but the way he phrased it I got the impression that he does not train on them in any manner that could be termed regular. I was looking thru some old mags the other day and saw a fellow purporting to be bending a horseshoe with his teeth! He had one side of the shoe clamped in a vise which was attached to a pole in such a way that he could stand next to it and bite the other side of the horseshoe, then using teeth, neck, and jaw strength he claimed to bend the horseshoe. There is more than the horse's 'shoe' involved in that claim!
Guest Reverend
Boy, you sure can turn a phrase! I remember reading Spielman's book about the Mighty Atom, how the Atom was able to bit through nails and chains with his teeth. Ow! The thought of just biting aluminum foil makes me cringe. -The Reverend

paul valpreda
Thanks again for the great information Joe. I want to wish John a very Happy Birthday! Brookfield is the reason that I became interested in serious grip training. His accomplishments are unbelievable. I purchased his book back '96 or '97 and it has been an invaluable tool in dramatically increasing my grip strength. I really appreciate the accomplishments of Brookfield and the type of person he is. I hope to see him continue to perform his amazing feats of strength for a very long time to come. Have a great day John! paul

If you ever come across this article again, I have a question: Do you remember if there were actual pictures in that article of that fellow [supposedly] bending the horse shoes in his mouth? Either way, I know this is an old post, bit I love reading about John Brookfield. Rich Cottrell Philadelphia, PA
David_wigren
At first I was like, “Jikes, only 43!? You mean to tell me he was in his early 20’s in all those videos from back in the day?”. But then I noticed this thread is 18 years old and John should be in his early 60’s by now.
Bearhugger
His book mastery of hand strength was one of the things that really got me into grip training. Great book and easy/fun to read.
