John Beatty
Was just a grade 2, but kind of cool. Took about 5 min of crushing/opening back up, but it finally snapped. Probably not the best idea, as I did a bending workout yesterday & did a few 5/16 grade 2's & a 1/4 grade 5, now my hands are aching. Still, pretty cool, though. pdoire
Hey Bolt Breaker, Great job....don't go broke...breaking
JohnOBrien
Good Job! Breaking is a blast. It always seems to give me blisters though. I'm not sure if it's the friction or if its the temperature of the metal before it finally gives in...
John Beatty
John- If the steel is heating up to the point of blistering you, you're doing it a whloe lot faster than I am
JohnOBrien
I've done G2's in less than 1 minute. My best is an IM Blue that took about 7 minutes. That was a good overall workout. Even worked up a pretty good sweat on that one!
mmainlands
Is anyone doing any unbraced bolt UNbending? It seems very difficult to straighten a previously bent bolt out to, or close to, a straight position without bracing. I would be interested to hear how unbenders are going about this. I can open the bolt somewhat unbraced, but in order to get it to near straight again I brace on the leg. I think an old post by Dave Horne did mention that he braced when bending back and forth many times in order to weather and break steel. Also, has anyone gone beyond straightening a yellow or better and actually bent it fully in the reverse direction? I have not yet, but am planning to try it out. I find that just before it is straight, it begins to twist out of position in the hand.
foggymountainmuscle
If I am unbending I simply must brace. The two ends of the piece are too close together to allow proper padding and a safe methode of separating them for me to do it unbraced, where by I would have to have nearly my entire had gripped around both ends. I feel bracing is safer because you can better control the nail or bolt and lessen the chance of it slipping as you try to straighten it. Bending a nail on the back of my thumb braced against my body, I am able to reverse U nails and that still does not garuntee a break. I think all benders should break their old stock, if only to get the most use possible out of you metal.
