  1. That's a nail every 15.6 seconds. I was wondering how you'd have time to wrap and tally. Great support network and bending community out there.

  4. Started running and kettlebells again this week after giving the knee two weeks rest. Also started a modified Keto too. The BJJ weight classes in the org I compete in have a huge jump between my current class (210) and the one below it (185). I walk around most days between 205 and 210 and I have to at least try to get to 195-190 the week of a comp in late October and then cut to 185 for comp day. We'll see. IBJJF also has a 194 weight class which seems much more reasonable but I generally like Grappling Industries better for a number of reasons. Anyway, SS7 Open Class attempt below. Time keeps improving. I gotta get better at the nail snap, it's killing my time. Grapplers class on Wednesday and Open Class again on Sunday.

  6. Here is a detailed write-up of the feat: I have been wanting to bend a whole 50lb box of 60d nails ever since I read about John Brookfield doing it. There is not tons of information out there about when John did it. I emailed him and asked about his feat. He responded and said lets talk on the phone. I had a great 30 minute conversation with him. Very nice guy. He bent a 50lb box on 3 different occasions. The first was at a Highlands Game competition is Kentucky. The other 2 times were in a Walmart. He was set up and just bending as people walked by. That would have been great to see. He said the boxes had around 525 nails. He said none of his feats were recorded. He did not have exact times they took. They were not recognized as official records. He wore golfers gloves and used some type of padding on the nails themselves too. He seemed excited that I was going to attempt his feat and encouraged me. I did the training similar to how I trained for my other big endurance feats. I ramped up the number of bends I did each week, topping out at about 50% of feat day. I did 50 then the next week 125 then the next week 250. The 250 tore my hands, which I was happy with because my hands then healed with good callouses. The 250 was done 9 days before the scheduled feat day. While I was training, I realized that shoulder endurance would be critical. Thus, the couple of weeks before the feat I did high rep Indian club work and other shoulder work to build up endurance. Amir Bayour and Chris Stilwell came over to help. We worked together like an assembly line. It was very efficient and helped me bend faster. Amir would put the new nails in a set of wraps. We had 4 sets of leather pads pre-wrapped so he could just stick the nail in the pads. Chris would re-wrap as necessary. Chris also measured all nails to make sure they were within 2 inches and kept track of how many nails I had bent on a pad of paper. Amir’s girlfriend, Kelly, took tons of great photos. My wife and kids also checked out the action. My 3 year old daughter kept laughing at me and saying I looked like Santa Claus because my neck and shirt were covered in chalk and white. The box weighed 51.5 pounds and had 576 nails in it. These were some times that Chris jotted down as we went: 100 Nails in 20 minutes and 59 seconds 273 nails in 1 hour 300 nails in 1 hour and 6 minutes 355 nails in 1 hour and 20 minutes 392 nails in 1 hour and 30 minutes 400 nails in 1 hour and 32 minutes 485 nails in 2 hours 504 nails in 2 hours and 6 minutes 576 nails in 2 hours, 29 minutes and 28 seconds My hands started tearing up at 200 and were pretty bad by the end. Also, friction burns all over my chest and under my chin from my hands rubbing on them. I wore 3 t-shirts to help with this but still got lots of burns. I also shaved, because I learned in training its not good to have all that rubbing pulling facial hair. My hands and forearms got quite a pump. Also, my chest muscles started spasming a bit at the end from all the crushing. My low back got quite fatigued too. My whole body is quite sore today still. After the box was bent, Amir and Chris did some great bending with the Horrido Bending bolts. My bending was done and I just enjoyed watching them bend some tough steel. Thanks for checking out my steel bending feat. Don Cummings

  7. Hi, I have a coc 2 from 2010 which is quite rusty, despite the 3 in 1 oil it gets stuck regularly after a fairly short time and the rust is still a little visible. My question is simple; can we use an anti rust treatment for the spring of iron mind grippers? I fear that there is a treatment on the spring and that it weakens the metal, in fact I use a product that tends to remove the surface treatments of the metal in particular the chrome if it is damaged.

  8. I have been thinking about how to tell this story for years, and always end up putting it on the back-burner, due to its complexity and not wanting to face reality, that this journey is near-complete, and with it, the end of a huge chapter of my life. Getting into the final year, the time is now, I guess. Onward ... After my Red Nail certification in August, 2010, I was trying to think of something unique, in that I could do long-term, that no one else had ever done. From the beginning, when I started bending steel, I wanted to become one of the best all-around benders in the world and sustain this over (at the time) at least 5 years (which of course, turned out to be 10+ years). After my Red cert, I decided to undertake a personal challenge: to bend an Ironmind Red Nail, under official cert. conditions, every 7-10 days, for as long as I could sustain it. I do not have my old log from Benders Battlefield in its entirely, but kept notes from the first few years. Years 1-3 were typically done once per-week. I did a bunch of other bends (cut-Reds for certs etc.) that I did not include as part of this challenge in the overall count. Also, there were a lot of days that I bent 2-3 Reds in the same session. These were not included; just the Red bend for that week. The first few years were easy, in retrospect, especially as I compare those years to the past few years' attempts. During those first few years, Reds were usually the easiest of 2-3 "challenge bars" I would do during weekly sessions. It wasn't until I hit 40 years old around 2014 that things started to hurt more and these weekly/bi-weekly sessions became much more challenging. There were several instances where I thought about stopping, but kept going. When I hit 5 years, I told myself that I would keep doing this as long as I was physically able, and set my sights on 10 years. I have told a few people over the years about the 10 year Red challenge, but never officially posted or wrote about it in detail until now. As I type this, I am at 9 years of bending a Ironmind Red Nail every 1-2 weeks, nonstop. This was through a lot of challenges, aside from the obvious. A few of the major things I encountered that almost derailed things were: Birth of my first son, where I stayed in the hospital for multiple days, with little sleep and no one really making it easy to bend in the hospital (had to hide everything). When I made the actual attempt, it was on a few hours of sleep, just a few seconds before the nurse came into the room. She definitely would not have been happy if she walked in when I was bending the Red at this time. PRK eye surgery - I planned my bends around my surgery date, to give myself about 12 days after the surgery to bend the Red. Kidney stone surgery (invasive) - This one was tough. They told me I could resume light training after 4-5 days, and then "normal" activities after 10 days. I just figured bending was not "normal" so didn't bother even trying to explain to the doctor. Multiple injuries - After turning 40, things started to break down a lot more frequently. I haven't really changed too much in training, but aches and pains have been nonstop for the past 5 years; especially the past 1-2 years. KTA/RRBT - I did both of these programs multiple times and had great As gains with grippers. My hands were destroyed for the better part of a year, which really made bending tough, but did not stop it. As I worked through week-after-week, and month-after-month of bends, I began thinking about the gravity of this endeavor; mainly, that if I would stop, it would be over for good. It took me over a year of dedicated training to cert. the Red back when I was in my mid-30s, in much better shape and condition. After 40, I was fully aware of some of my newfound limitations, and the reality, if I would stop bending Reds, it would likely be over for good. And I wasn't willing to give this up just yet. Bending, and by extension the Red Nail, were so intertwined into my personality, identity, and weekly routine, that I have been fighting to keep this going as long as possible. At 9 years, the end is in sight. And that is partly why I am writing this now. This is probably a little too much rambling, and I might go back and fine-tune it a little later on, but I know the last year is going to be a challenge and I am hoping to use the board as a platform for accountability, and more importantly, motivation. As such, I will post updates here in this thread over the next year, and hopefully, wrap it up after 10 years of continuous, bi-weekly Red Nail bends. In the picture below are most of the Reds during this streak. I counted 292 Red Nails. As mentioned above, this does not include all of the nails, including some of the shorter (5.5") Reds and the official cert. nail, which are in the "big bend" box. It kinda makes me sad typing this up, as I know that this cannot go on forever. It;s been such a huge part of my life for so long, that I cannot remember when I wasn't bending. And wasn't waiting for the weekly/bi-weekly Red Nail bend to keep it going.

  10. Appreciate the details of the feat! Especially the data. Some quick math puts you at: - 4.6 nails/min over the 1st hour. - 3.5 nails/min over the 2nd hour. - 3.1 nails/min over the last ~30 minutes.

  11. August 10, 2020 Before Supper Back around to week 1 again for another 12 week cycle. 13. I have the Vikn coming so I'll see here soon. I've been going clean hands on my IM Axle lately with good results - but I keep it cleaned down bare as well. I do use chalk on Gracie and my Hex block and Blobs. So far nothing I have found beats "the bucket" that is just every chalk I empty out of climbing chalk bags - mostly Metolius Super Chalk - Black Diamond and Gorilla stuff with a few oddball chalk balls etc. Every WR etc set at Gripmas over the years used the bucket. I'll continue to experiment - it's just something I like to play with - as much for climbing as for grip.

  14. Ha. Then you are in for a treat down the road. I'm convinced we are capable of well beyond what has been done (as you yourself are proving).

  15. I forgot to mention, Chris gave me this great Gold show hammer he made as a congrats gift. The hammer head has a very cool shape that I have not seen before. The head is stamped that it weighs 13 pounds. I am very thankful and grateful for the hammer. Here is a pic of the hammer and Chris, Amir and I in action.

  16. I am pretty sure I would go. My approach to Corona restrictions is that I observe whatever guidelines (and laws) are in place at the time. So as long as the gathering is done in a way that is legal, I am in. I'd keep 6 feet from folks and have a mask on hand (assuming that's still the guideline then). It was a pretty big place and we were only about 10 last year. Even if more people showed, it wouldn't be unreasonably crowded. And no, I would not wear the mask doing the events lol. As long as no one is up near my face while I do them I'm fine. What events are in? I'd LOVE to see Dynamometer.

  17. Glute bridges. Bw squats. Planks. Bastard in IMPs. It's really weird how pain prevents us from accessing our power. I took like 3 hits (with breaks) on this Bastard before my index finger numbed up. After that, I melted it in 4 hits. I could have easily just walked away after any of the first hits...and given up. "Q" 0-1 DR @ 8 3/8" in IMPs. So during my first 50 days, I melted zero Qs in singles. Since then, and including today, I've bent 9 out of 10 in singles. Very defined progress. It amazes me how much I DONT know about bending. Today while working on the Q, i cocked my right wrist about 1/2" towards my chest (on the sweep), and moved it 25 degrees. So much of bending is harnessing power and delivering it at optimum angles. I need to pay even closer attention to my hits...if I want to be top notch bender. So another grease the groove day...but glad i did it.
