How Long Grip Training: 4 years

Current Grip Training Program: I'm starting Aaron's drop set program with grippers and I plan on starting his program for 2HP. I also love to bend in all styles and do a decent amount of blob work.

Other Training Info: I'm working on Starting Strength to get back the strength that I lost due to my back injury.

Other Info: I want to dedicate this to my mom who has found a way to put up with me for some reason over the last 18 years.

Acknowledgements: Aaron Corcorran and Paul Knight for teaching me everything I know and for constantly pushing me to achieve bigger and better things. I also want to thank John Hicks for being the first person to introduce me to grip training. This also goes out to all the guys on the Bender's Battlefield, thanks for the encouragement fellas.

Could you tell us a little about your background in lifting?

(age, when started lifting, why you started, what you do now as far as lifts)

I started lifting at age 14 because I started freshman football. I stopped playing football shortly after

but I stuck to lifting. I'm still not very strong because I have been plagued by injuries but I always

work hard and I hope to achieve a lot in the years to come.

How did you get into grip training?

I used to frequent the Bodybuilding.com forums and I found a thread where John Hicks mentioned

Ironmind grippers so I PM'd him and he recommended I join Gripboard and learn all I could. I then met

Aaron Corcorran and he has taught me so much over the last 4 years that I can't thank him enough.

You are now a GripBoard Mash Monster, what would you recommend to those aspiring to close this

gripper?

It may seem obvious but all it takes is hard work and dedication. Some programs work better than others

but I've never really done a solid program. Mostly I have just "screwed around" with grippers and through

hard work I have become strong at them. However, I would still recommend a solid program like Aaron's

one that revolves around drop sets, RRBT, or KTA.

What does your current grip routine look like?

Braced bending on my bench day, freestyle bending on my shoulder press day, grippers Monday and

Friday, 2HP on Wednesday, and a mixture of other stuff in between. However, I'm still significantly

tweaking my grip routine and I still need to figure everything out.

How has your grip routine changed since you first started training your grip?

I have focused my training on the important exercises and I now try to use a real routine instead of just

trying different exercises every workout.

There seems to be a significant variation in the frequency of grip workouts among trainees even with the common goal of ultimate grip strength. Have you experimented with workout frequency and it's affect on your training?

I tend to recover quickly, especially with the use of contrast baths, so I can workout 3 times a week and still workout at full intensity.

What are your favorite grip exercises?

Any kind of bending and blob pinching

What kind of starting routine would you recommend for a trainee new to grip training?

David Horne's program is very solid and I think it is great to build a base in grip strength. Basically you

just need a light mixture of 2 hand pinch, thick bar, and wrist work.

Who do you most admire in gripdom?

Aaron Corcorran, Paul Knight, David Horne, and Chris Rice

If you were to start over again with your grip training, what would you do differently?

Not overtrain so much starting out and focus on the more important exercises. I also wish I would have

worked more on body strength and focused a little less on grip.

What do you believe is the most difficult grip exercise?

The mental and physical toughness that is required to bend at a high level is not even close to anything I

have ever experienced, powerlifting included.

What are some of your personal bests in grip exercises?

Huge Shiny Bastard

Double bodyweight DO Axle Lift (One of the first to do so)

Bodyweight 2HP

5/8" x 23" Braced Bend

Bastard Bend at 15 years and 9 days old

Youngest/lightest ever to do several other things (various bends, blob lift, etc.)

What do you believe is the most common mistake made by new grip trainees?

Overtraining and becoming too obsessed with gripper training when this is one of the least important grip

exercise in terms of carryover and application.

What do you consider to be the greatest grip feats of all time?

Millennium DB lift

Blob+25 (Wade is incredibly strong)

#4 close

Any and all of Gazza's unbraced bends (especially the barehanded Edgin and kinking a Big G8

barehanded)

All of Carl Ansara's braced bends (3/4" x 34" is just psychotic and unfathomable to me)

Do you have any parting advice for readers?

Find someone in your area and train with them. You can learn a lot online but you will learn more in 2

hours training with an experienced grip guy than you will in a year on the internet. Also, never be afraid

to ask for help. 99% of grip guys are the friendliest guys on earth and they will be happy to help you with

whatever you need.
