"fixing" Rubberized Dumbbell Heads

So, the Y I go to has all these dumbbells with rubberized (rubber coated) heads. Apparently some of the teenagers in there are in the habit of trying to lift the 100lbs dumbbells (although the can't) in some fashion, and when the fail, they just drop them, which caused on of the 100lbers to develop a bent handle....

So naturally, the Y is going to get rid of the bent dumbbell and I'm going to see if I can get it from them, so I can use it to make two big block weights... But I'm not sure what the best way would be to get the rubber off the heads. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bobby

I think a handsaw would do.

They look like rough hexes on the inside.

Clarification: a hand saw to get the cut started, then a chisel and hammer to get the bits off.

I believe it comes off pretty easily once there's a cut started.

Yeah... Wonder If there is a chemical I could use to strip it?

A safe-ish one, I mean. To help remove the adhesive.

you might want to leave the rubber on. they can be cast extremely poorly.

if you have your heart set on removing I'd say a carpet razor and pliers. fumes could be rough.

True. And I could always call them "easy" 100s. Haha

I have removed the rubber off some hex dumbbells. My cores were round. There was a bunch of lead in the ends too. Removing the rubber was a huge pain in my butt. I used a knife and a hammer and chisel. I think you should just leave the rubber on.

Just to clarify. Try to get like 99% off, before torching if you go that route.

Yeah I'll probably just leave the rubber on if I get them. Thanks guys.
