Developments In World Grip Sport Collective

Jedd Johnson

Recommended Posts

I am going to be relaying the developments from the discussions within the World Grip Collective here at the Gripboard, and David will be doing so on his forum as well.

We have been very active in discussing items, the first of which was the weight classes.

We have decided first of all that all competitors should be weighed in prior to the contest, no longer than 2 hours before start-up. This will help us pin their results into one of the weight classes.

Weight classes will be the next item decided.

Thanks,

Jedd

Recaping some of the developments...

1. Weight Classes

Weight class structure for records/contests

Men: 59k, 66k, 74k, 83k, 93k, 105k, 120k, 120k+

Women: 47k, 52k, 57k, 63k, 72k, 84k, 84k+

Master's: Age brackets 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+. 59k, 66k, 74k, 83k, 93k, 105k, 120k, 120k+

In an effort to make competitions more fair for all, we opted to go with more weight classes. For the most part, we went with IPF weight classes which seemed to us to match Grip a bit better than some of the other options out there in other strength sports. This is not to say that promoters MUST use these weight classes. At first this will simply serve to align our recorded lifts, establish records, be used for rankings. The promoter will weigh the competitors and provide the data of their weight with their lifts and will be organized in that manner. The promoter is free to hold the classes they like; for instance Open, Novice, Elite, sub-82.5kg, etc.

2. Weigh-ins

All competitors should be weighed in prior to the contest, no longer than 2 hours before the start.

The idea here is to get an accurate bodyweight of the individual. Some sports allow weigh-ins days in advance of a contest. We saw it a better way to do it the day of and no longer than two hours before contest start. A calibrated scale is best, but point-calibration is permitted as well.

3. Open class name

If there is a contest with a small number of classes divided by bodyweight, the heavier catch-all class will be dubbed Open. A good example we are very familiar with is the Worlds Strongest Hands competitions where there is a cut-off at 82.5 kg and anyone over that is considered to be in the Open class.

4. Master's classes

Master's: Age brackets 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+. 59k, 66k, 74k, 83k, 93k, 105k, 120k, 120k+

These were established to separate the age groups and bodyweights to keep things fair. We have recognized the fact that Grip strength generally stays with a person much longer so larger age brackets were used.

Next / Other

Lots of other things are on our list of items to discuss. We appreciate people being interested in the developments and welcome respectful questions or if something is unclear please let us know and we will do our best to convey our thought processes.

Thanks.

Two other things that we discussed and voted on recently.

1. Website Records Lists

Aaron Corcorran is awesome with website coding and is developing standings/lists for some of the events, sort of like top 50 lists for the contested lifts. So that is going to be a great thing for the sport. Competitors will be able to go to a site and see what the best numbers are and what to shoot for, etc.

2. Inclusion of Existing Contest Results

With the development of established wieght classes, we will be using results from prior contests that had weighed plates and where the competitors were weighed on point-calibrated or calibrated scales. For instance, the Gripmas results will be logged in since their weight requirements met the standards we are using now. If other promoters kept their records and met the standards we are looking for, they can be sent in and added.

I think we are caught up now on the developments.

Thanks,

Jedd

That's good news as I started to wonder if anyone other than myself was going to step up and maintain top50 lists. Moreover, the Gripboard software is driving me insane. I will remove lists as they appear on this new website and keep those that he does not include.

Yes, it's been something I wanted to do for a while, having a rankings list of some sort tied closer to the gripsport.org site, but I am not that strong with coding and it never got off the ground.

Keep in mind though that the pressure will be on to update the lists as results come in. I am usually very quick so it will look bad if everything slows down to a standstill. I am not saying this will happen but there is a great responsibility maintaining these lists. So far no one, myself included, has maintained any lists for more than a few years.

Lists will be sql database driven and the list pages will generate on the fly. Proof of concept is done but there is still much to do including coding the results management interface and adding more results to the database. Right now I only have current top 50 list for 2011 for the 2HP loaded as a starting point. At some point in the future I plan to have a secure access area for approved promoters to log into and easily enter their own results via the management interface. Results would then go live with approval from a list admin like myself or whover else may take on that role.

Sorry, I was busy trying to build the right tool for the task. Doing lists on the Forums has always been pretty manual labor, and time intensive. Time is what I am generally short on. I'm not a webmaster by trade, IT professional yes but more of a tinkerer with web stuff. It took a couple months of free time to build a database driven custom content management solution for my own website. That included the bending bar rating page you may have seen. All of that is autogenerated now and I knew it was just what we needed for the performance lists. Since I was elected to the committee I felt I should offer to do this since I have the skills and we are working out the details to make this sport better. With better defined rules, classes, etc and a main site to go to it will make it much easier and appropriate to get good long term lists solution like this into place.

We need to add the rule that world records must be broken by at least 0.5 kilos, GripTopz records being the exception at 0.25 kilos.

Thanks Eric, good point brother.

In an effort to have world records "mean something" we voted to require that new world records set should beat the prior record by .5 kilos for the bigger lifts and .25 kilos for the Grip Topz lifts.

I will experiment for a day or two (pasting word documents) before I send you a 'please-help' email.
