The Steel Slayers' Top 20 and Junior Steel Slayer Bending Lists

Freestyle Rules

1) All bends must be completed within 3 minutes. Except for the rules regarding the wraps, all other Gripboard bending rules apply.

2) Only one wrap will be allowed per each side of the bar. With the wrap rolled up in the direction it will be applied to the bar, it must pass through a hole measuring no greater than 1.25" in diameter. The hole must be cut in material measuring at least .75" thick. For this test it is not required that the wrap be rolled around any stock. Wraps that are obviously thinner than 1.25" don't necessarily need to be measured on the video. A single standard size rubber band may be applied to each side of the bar to hold the wraps in place. Thigh padding is allowed, provided it is a supple material.

3) A video which shows the length of the bar, the wrap requirements, and the 2" maximum distance requirement is sufficient proof. Video is not required for contest bends, provided all of the other rules have been followed.

4) All bars must be calibrated by Eric Milfeld or by someone using a similar calibration device approved by him.

5) For a bend to rank higher than another bender's existing bend it must calibrate at least 15 pounds heavier, however, a bender may improve upon his own bend in 5 pound increments. So, for example, it is possible that a bend of 500 would tie one of 490 if the 490 was performed first by another bender. The calibration rating attained at the list's namesake length or longer is the only rating allowed for ranking, regardless of actual bar length. For example, if you bend a 6.5" section of steel from a batch that calibrates at 500 pounds at 7" you will be given credit for only 500 pounds. If, however,a 7.25" bar calibrates at 500 pounds credit will be given for 500 pounds on the 7" length list.

Additional Calibration Rules

It is preferred that bars bent for the lists are attained from one solid length of calibrated rod. If, however, nails or bolts are used at least three samples from the same box or bin must be calibrated, with the lowest figure attained being used for list ranking.

Junior Steel Slayers

Rules

1)All boys and girls no older than 12 years old are eligible.

2)All other Steel Slayer rules apply, but it isn't necessary for the bar to measured or wrapped on videotape prior to the bend. It's the parent's responsibility to measure the bar, have it calibrated, and insure the wraps are within specs. Showing the 2" or less distance between the legs is required on the video.

Congratulations, David Wigren! You are the first to earn a spot on the list and did so with a very stout bend!

Thank you. It's good to be number 1, even if it'll only be for a short while when Gazzas bend gets cal'd and other start posting

Great Job David, that is a great way to start off the new list. I am glad to see the newer stainless steel calc'd that high.

Thanks Mike. The numbers are pretty normal for stainless. Eric got 3 peices and they all cal'd exactly the same. Not the hardest stainless but not the weakest either wich was what I thought at first. Should've treated it with more respect I guess, concerning some statements I've made about this stainless earlier. :help

Just wondering is your calibration method still the same to 30 degrees.

Yes, it is. Are you thinking about calibrating your own steel?

Eric

I was just wondering the 30 degrees still wont account for the harder crush on the stainless and g8 bolts etc we could do with something that holds a bolt say bend to 3inches between the legs sideways then apply weight to the top leg so its crushed down to the 2inch mark then we can measure the last inch of crush.

Something like a pipe bending press with a hydraulich gauge on it or something on the floor holding the bent item sideways and then weight is applied to the top leg pushing it down onto the other leg.

I used to calibrate my own stock a long while back useing a 1 1/8" bar with a nut with a half inch hole through the middle welded on the top of it and used the deadlift method trouble was after 6oolbs my fingers were fine but i was having to hitch up the weight which was causing inaccuracies i then switched to a pulley system but this was very dodgy and actually cracked the main reinforced concrete beam in my old garage so i abandoned that.

The calibration has its purposes and its nice to see the numbers that bent steel calibrate at but sometimes its better to not worry about these things and just bend the steel or not depending on how hard it is.

Sometimes numbers are a barrier and can syke you out.

I witnessed Paul take down a particularly difficult Edgin in well under a minute last night. Congrats, buddy! The 7" list is finally up and running with the mark to beat.

Totally awsome Paul! :rock:rock:rock

Don't get to comfortable though. I'm working on some hard 7" bends. Better reinforce that position if you wish to keep it

I have plans to smash that at the comp (I hope) ... I really was just interested in feeling how hard these tough Edgins felt and used Eric's wraps which got me on the list.

I have no doubt you are going to get some crazy hard bends David! It will be fun if we can get a back and forth going ... seems the trick right now is finding out how much the steel cal's at.

I think you'll end up on top in the end. That KOAB is yours, good luck Paul

I bent a piece of leftover stock from The Show of Hands Grip Cup 2007: a 6" section of 70D nail that calibrates at 670. Since dropping weight from over 200 pounds down to sub 185 I've noticed a significant drop in crushing strength, but I've maintained most of my kinking ability. Now I need to locate something between this bar and a big 6" grade 5, as this one took only about a 95% effort on the crush. You'll notice in the video that after getting one half of the bar wrapped Sandy has to inform me that I failed to measure the length of the bar. :laugh And she insisted I bend without my shirt on since I'm so sexy since losing most of my flab.

At least you did it in the house so you wouldn't distract the neighbors! ;) Both you and Paul have really changed a lot in the last month.

Great bend, Eric! Congrats to you, Paul, and David.

Looking pretty lean Eric! It's nice to see you kept the strength though with the significant weight loss - good work!
