Technique Check

Started training bending last week, and wanted to get a baseline, as well as struggle with a bar to see technique under stress.

This is 9/32" O1 drill rod in two David Horne wraps (each ~9 inches long?).

Bend starts @ 1:08 (had a nighmare of a time uploading as is let alone cut), and apologies--didn't realize how far away I was standing.

I've already picked up a ton of good advice here on the forums, and any comments are appreciated!

Not that it matters for a training bend, let alone my second real session ever, but it looks to be just over 2". Gotta buy a ruler!

Wouldn't hurt to get closer to the camera next bend.

Next time you go for the crush...check that you are as far down on the nail as you can be.

You really want to be applying your pressure on the ends of the nail.

CHALK your hands...the front, the back and in between your fingers. This will help your crush immensely.

I would reiterate what Nate said about hands as low on the bar as possible during the crush and definitely plenty of chalk on the hands and fingers.

I would also say to remember to keep your elbows up during the kink. Also, when I crush down a bar I find I can generate more force if the ends of the bar are pointed a bit away from my body as opposed to too close and straight down or even towards the body....others may have different results but it doesn't hurt to try varying positions and see what works best for you.

I also suspect your wraps could have been a tad bit tighter, and don't be afraid to throw some chalk inside the wraps as well.

Other than those minor critiques great job man!

Thanks, Nate. The crush did feel a lot harder than the kink or sweep; I'll be sure to make sure I'm lower on the bar for the crush portion. And yeah no chalk, lol. I'll remember next time.

Thanks, Frank. When you say "crush down on a bar" you mean during the crush portion, right? Yeah I tend to hold it like a gripper by default, I guess. I'll play around with various positions.

Yep no chalk in the wraps either, not sure why not, lol.

Yeah, I'm referring to the crush when I say that.

I did quite a bit of experimenting with positioning during the crush before I settled on how I do it now....which coincidentally is fairy close to how E.J. teaches in his video on how to crush in the Important Videos thread he started. Which is a great place to start for crush technique explanation and demonstration.

That said, I'm not technically perfect, but I do what feels comfortable as well as powerful for me. I typically don't hold the steel like a gripper but there are plenty of benders that do, so it's definitely a well-tested method. I happen to be comparatively weak at grippers never having closed anything over 145, so I don't gain too awful much holding the steel like that, but someone like P.K. who is an absolute beast at grippers has had plenty of success with that crush method!

Just trial and error I suppose, and lots of practice.

1/4" CRS Hex in Single IMP's, 1/4" CRS Square in Double DH Suede, 1/4" FBBC Square in Double DH Suede (Fail). Hex was ridiculously easy; once I got past the kink in the first square bar, it was relatively easy, and the FBBC bar (which is from 2011), barely wobbled.


Not sure if I was out of gas from the first square bar, if the age (Daniel Reinard gave it to me in 2012, bar is from 2011) or rusts on the bar made a difference, or if it's just that much harder than the onlinemetals.com square bar.

Maybe it's just the video but it looks like you are starting to apply pressure as you are leaning back, then you lean forward. If this is the case you are losing power and over working trying to make it up. I also noticed you are dropping the bar on the sweep. Keep the bar high and tight. I also noticed you engage your back on the kink but not so much on the sweep. A good way to fix this is to always shrug as high as possible as a set up for every hit.

Rust makes no difference on a bar. Metal varies like crazy. So that particular batch could have had bull-dozer blades Melted in with it. While other batch's could have had nothing but sheet metal or car rims in it.

If you work on this and are conscious of it you will tap into strength you didn't know you had. Since Started bending I've always said the same thing, let the big muscles do all the work. Let your back take the beating not your forearms or chest.

IMP's are your friends. Buy some and don't bend in anything else for a year. When you feel the need to do some pain tolerance bends, a single one is ideal and still very safe. DH wraps are lovely, but they're too small for you to start in.

Tech wise it will just take some time to figure out. IMP's will help in this regard alot. That being said, you can (and are) chicken winging the kink. That's ok, but try pointing your palms toward your own body or down, not to the front of the room.

Thanks Mike. When you say chicken winging, is that dropping my elbows? I definitely see what you mean about the direction my palms are facing, I wasn't even aware I was doing that. I'll work on that, too.

Right now I'm doing two or three days a week, with the first two days being IMP's only. First day is one IMP volume, right now with 1/4" SS round and 1/4" O1 DR. Second day is single IMP's (one on each end of the bar) volume, with one or two bigger effort bends, right now 17/64" and 9/32" DR. Lots of hammer work on both days, too.
