The Texas Horseshoe Twisters

Rules

1) The bend must be completed within 3 minutes.

2) Only one wrap will be allowed per each side of the shoe. With the wrap rolled up in the direction it will be applied to the shoe, it must pass through a hole measuring no greater than 1.25" in diameter. The hole must be cut in material measuring at least .75" thick. For this test it is not required that the wrap be rolled around the shoe. A single standard size rubber band may be applied to each side of the shoe to hold the wraps in place. Wraps that are obviously thinner than 1.25" don't necessarily need to be measured on the video. Thigh padding is allowed, provided it is a supple material.

3) The shoe must break 180 degrees when fully bent. This must be demonstrated by resting the bent shoe with its bottom flush on a flat surface and checking to see that at least one end of the shoe is not resting on the flat surface.

4) When cutting the shoes both legs should be cut equally. The overall length of the shoe will be measured with the shoe standing upright on a flat surface.

5) A video which shows both sides of the shoe, as well as all of the shoe's markings, the wrap requirements, and proof of a 180+ degree bend is required. Shoes which come in more than one thickness or width must have these dimensions measured, as well. Video is not required for contest bends, provided all of the other rules have been followed.

6) The following, in order of difficulty, are all of the shoes allowed for ranking on the two separate lists. Other shoes will added to the list as relative difficulty is established:

F1) St. Croix Rim Lite "00"

F2) St. Croix Plain Lite "00"

Congratulations to Mr. Rosendaul! Nick has become the first to cert on this super awesome and cool new list with a F2 Tornadoe bend of a St. Croix Plain Lite #3. Nick assures me this was only a trial run at the cert process and bigger shoes are waiting in the wings!

If any of you guys need a place to get shoes from this is the place. My link They have any shoe you want and if they don't thay can order it. The best part is they are only 30 min. form me! :tongue:D Give them a call they are super nice and helpful. Tell them Nick Rosendaul the shoe bender from Columbus sent ya. :D One time i was in and a guy called about shoes for bending I was in the warehouse looking for some shoes so they came back and i told them a list of easy to hard. I could even leave a list of the cert shoes there if you wanted me to so they would know when anyone calls in about it for those that can't get the shoes local.

My fault, Nick, but I fixed it. Thanks again for taking the initiative to get the ball rolling. And thanks for the link!

I just finished bending an F2 (St. Croix Plain Lite 00). It felt pretty easy, but the Plain Regular didn't quite go tonight. It's still processing at the moment, but here's the link: http: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0-tsnbnacc

This ranking and addition of shoes will have to be a work in progress. I discovered no noticeable difference in difficulty between the Rim Regular 00 and the Plain Lite 00. They bend differently, but take equal amount of effort. You will notice we have only three shoes for the time being on each of the lists. So, I will add shoes as they are proven to to fill a distinct niche. Suggestions are, of course, welcome.

I improved on last night's bend of a St. Croix Plain Lite 00 by cutting off 11/16" of each leg of the same shoe. This felt pretty close to a max effort. I doubt I could of done any better inside the three minute time limit. I'm using this shoe cut to an overall length of 4" to fill the gap between the Plain Lite 00 and the Plain Regualar 00. I think it fits nicely.

Thank you, Ben and Nick! Yeah, give 'em a try, Nick. It's a bit of work, but cutting down the occasional shoe is a lot of fun.

your wraps were good/within the rules ..... the bend was within the time limit ..... the degree of bend was legal ...... but the video nulified the cert

  • 3 weeks later...

I've decided to go back to my original plan of not using cut-down shoes. I think the Diamond Bronco Plain "000" fills the "F3" position nicely. I had made a decision not to use Diamonds because I had misinterpreted a message I read on the web about the company discontinuing its shoes. Apparently, this applies only to their pitching shoes, so now we should have much less difficulty expanding this list a little and filling in gaps.

And I finally found a place on-line to order just about every Diamond shoe there is, as well as many other brands! Shoot me a PM if you're interested in the company name.

By the way, the "F3" bend I've credited myself with is the one I did at The Steel Slayers Showdown.

For me, hard! :whacked I don't think it was quite as hard as the St. Croix Plain Regular #3 I did, but with that shoe I used thicker pads.

I ordered these from Centaur Forge. One thing that isn't made clear on their website is the fact that all the Diamond shoes are sold by weight. I ordered 5 expecting to get five pairs, but ended up with only 4 shoes. I called them back today and the lady was nice enough to send me another shoe because of the misunderstanding. These ones come out to $5 a shoe + shipping. There must be a cheaper place to buy these, but I haven't seen them anywhere else.

I will be sending yours and Mitch's out tonight, Carl.

Here's the video of my hard fought bend:

Carl is crazy strong with horseshoes (and a bunch of other chunks of steel), I'm hoping he can show us what that might be. :)

Great bend Eric!!! I have bent some of the DS5's but not as of late because when i jacked up my arm a wile back i lost a lot of my bending strength. Getting it back slow. I know Jedd had some DS5's for Paul that he forgot when he was In Columbus for the Arnold. I know Ken-Davis my link above can get them they just don't carry them any more. I need to buy a box if you get them and I think it was 65$ for a box and you got 18 or 20 to a box ,But I didn't have any shipping because I can go there and pick them up. :tongue I need to make a shoe run here soon. Going to get some of the shoes on the cert list.

I didn't know about your injury, Nick. I certainly wish you all the best with your recovery.

They are one of the harder shoes to find. Up until yesterday, the biggest size shoe I had bent was a #3. These bigger draft shoes have a different feel. I want to say it was more upper body and a little less wrist and hands, relative to the much smaller shoes I've been focusing on.

Thanks very much Eric!

Ive wanted to get my hands on a DS#5 since I saw a pic of one!

Im very interested to see what you think of the #4 Cemtec shoe, I haven't bent enough brands to give a fair opinion however I found them MUCH tougher than ST croix lite #3's
