Quest For Gripstrength Starting With Gripper #3

Recommended Posts

Ok,I just want to share my training results as up till now and further with you lot. I had a big deal of help from the gripboardpopulation and from reading from the internet, so if anyone can benefit from my log, why not. 23 august this year I shut my #3 deep set and captured it on cam. I did it a couple of times earlier, but from there I seemed to be consistent every training. From there, my goal was and is to close the thing CCS ironmind rules and certify later on. I first want to focus on grippers and from there I want to train open handstrength and supporting strength. With the goal in sight, I focus on grippers now. I started in 2008 with the #1 and #2 being my first grippers and I could close them both right out of the package (#2 but just, but it was closed). From there I bought the #3 and was amazed by the difference in resistance. From there I would try every training method I read about and would do that for almost every day. yes í'm addicted. NO GOOD. Why it took me almost two years to figure that out, dunno, but it cost me a lot of lost time in progress. Since my campingvacation this year without any grippers with me, I was amazed what two weeks of complete rest did! That's for the intro, from here I'll start describing my training and start with my log. Sorry for the long post, but it will give you an idea of my situation. I now train one session heavy and then take at least 4 days of rest. Works best for me. I also bought and read KTA, it's a very good Ebook with the most techniques covered. the high workload didn't work for me at this point, but the techniques did. Also I read a lot from articles on the net, mostly from guys who are also active on this board.

Equipment in this quest: IM grippers #1 till #4 and #2.5 as in between gripper. #2.5 choked to parallel with hose clamp. adjustable gripper and one 'homemade gripmachine' (photo in my profile gallery), lot of chalk, broom/vacuumcleaner for cleaning up chalk afterwards :rolleyes

15/10/10 Evening session (Last griptraining monday 11/10)

Warming up with squats ATG, 10 reps 50 kg;

washing hands in very warm water for a minute or two, hands are glowing from warmth;

IM #1 X 5 singles left and right;

Squats 5 reps 70 kg;

Status check CCS #3, RH first try, couldn't measure the gap, but smaller than one cm;

LH straphold with choked #2.5, 2,5 kg plate, around ten seconds;

Squats 2 reps 100 kg;

second attempt CCS #3, RH second try, about the same in distance as first try;

LH straphold #2,5 5 kg, around 5 sec.;

squats 2 reps 100 kg;

Adjustable gripper around low #3.5 level forced close and tried straphold, fail RH, LH level lower, but one or two sec. 2.5 kg;

squats 2 reps 100 kg;

Negatives adjustable gripper at about level #3.5, shut close against leg and trying to close, when opening, slamming it shut again against leg, putting in

a LOT of effort, face turns green.

The same for LH, only a level lower, LH is a bit behind, right is dominant although I'm left handed. figures?

Squats, some reps and after that, singles static holds on my homemade gripmachine, up to around 80 kg's.

I ended the session with one wristcurl both ways with thick fixed pvc tube at shoulderheight, around 40 kg's. Wasn't able to finish, underarms are waisted.

That's it. 19/10/10 next workout.

Good luck on your COC certification quest! It's a very worthy goal.

Thanks Ben, Oh and in my ending I meant wristROLLER and not wristCURL.

Was looking out to today's training session! But today my arm injury which still bugs is playing up again... :angry:

That somewhat took me off my training intensity :angry:

Did pretty much the same as last training session, warming up, warm water, squats,

two status checks and after that some heavy negatives with the adjustable and strapholds with my choked #2.5.

I demonstrated my second #3 CCS try out before my wife and she was convinced that the gap is getting smaller.

It's just a few hairs! When doing some attempts and negatives, my closing strength quickly drops in a trainingsession,

so next time a won't give the #3 a try, and directly go the heavier gripper/settings on my adjustable.

Acutally, my sweep has gotten stronger, till the very very last part of the close, while my closing strength was

at it's highest point after my vacation! Now i seem to have trouble with the very last part.

So I'm thinking what to do: taking longer resting periods (5 days) or just keep this program. Maybe time to

put the choker on my #3 and start working on strapholds while still fresh...some thoughts would be welcome. :help

Next training session this weekend!

This afternoon I decided to do my next workout after a nice walk with my wife and kids...

When I started training, I felt a bit tired somehow. So I made a short one this afternoon. Maybe because of my youngest daughter who kept us out of our sleep

the last weeks. She had a lot of pain in her ears and got some light surgery. She got little tubes in her ears (don't know if this is

the right translation but hope you get the idea, hope this helps for the little one). Because of the short nights our energy levels are getting a bit lower during the day I noticed, so maybe that's the reason for my weak last two trainingsessions.

Warmed up my hands with warm water;

A lot or reps with squats, 70 kgs for starting the circulation;

5 singles left and right #1;

5 reps squats 100 kg;

Right hand status check CCS #3, not even close;

Overcrush #2.5 left hand, cost a lot of effort;

left the squats and took a few minutes rest for another CCS try #3, again not even near;

Note: made an alteration on my adjustable gripper so I can now easily choke it to parallel.

Did 2 forced attempts on #3.5 setting both hands turned into negatives;

Ended with Singles with my 'homemade gripmachine', working the full range (putting the handle right in the top of my fingers and then working to the close), ended with 70 kg's with left and right hand separate.

Again, not my best workout. Next one will not include testing CCS with the #3. I'm thinking of putting in one or two weeks higher workload in KTA style

and then taking a full seven days resting period, maybe thiss will create more of a strength stimulus.

I'm also thinking about ordering the #3.5 for some more spot-on negatives, maybe the adjustable gives a good workout but misses somehow the carryover.

That is absolutely true Mr T! Last night was no fun, the little one was awake from 03.00 am till app. 04.30 pm, so there goes the

the resting for recovery! My wife ransacked the local drugstore with homeopathic stuff today :laugh so will see what next night will bring.. :mellow

But sorry guys for my selfpity yesterday, there's work to be done! Today back with a vengeance! :devil

This evenings training stuff:

- Filed #2.5 with 1 kg strap;

- #4 for negatives

- Choked adjustable gripper around 'end #2.5 begin #3' also for strapholds

Warm up and circulation going with deadlifts (hands can handle much more then back and legs can pull, so there's no problem with

exhausting the hands in between).

Chalk up and there we go! By the way, the #3 is hanging on my wall and looking at me 'Geralt are you not going to try to close me today' he says. I look up to him and say 'Nay! You had your chance yesterday. You can only look at me the next period and be afraid my friend....be VERY afraid for this year you will go down CCS! :mosher '

DL 12X60 kg's warming up;

#4 Deep set as possible and forced closed agains leg, then holding for around 6 - 8 secs, L and R;

DL 10x90 kg's;

Filed #2.5 with 1 kg L and R, deep set and then mash for my life, mash mash mash mash :pinch (around 8-10 secs);

DL 10x100 kg's;

#4 repeat as mentioned with both hands;

Adjustable gripper choked end #2.5 level same as mentioned with filed #2.5 before;

DL 10x100 kg's;

#4 repeat again as mentioned;

Adjustable gripper choked around 'easy #3' level and straphold 1 kg both hands, mash mash mash :pinch !

DL 10x100 kg's

#4 repeat again;

'homemade gripmachine' full closes with 40 kg's L 10 times and R 6 times.

L is less wasted now because the #4 is a bit to hard for my left hand I guess to get the work done, the gripper immediately opens up the hand.

R is stronger and can get the work done with negatives.

that's it for today. BTW, ordered a COC #3.5 today from Gripper Superstore. Can't wait to get my hands on this one! I then have the full range to get the work done. More workouts will follow this week. this is NOT the time now to ease up!

Thnx T.

A quick update before I go to work:

Yesterday evening short but heavy griptraining combined with bench, for times sake I'll leave the bench out.

5x Heavy negatives on #4

combined with strapholds 1 kg on the choked adjustable, around end #2.5 begin #3.

Intensity is very high on both the strapholds and the negatives, #4 is a bit on the heavy side to fully get the desired result, after a few singles

my hands open up to quickly in my idea.

But again, there's where I hope the #3.5 will kick in.

Hands feel actually quite good! Today no workout, Thursday again, if my hands still feel good as they feel now. Carefull not to overdo it.

Thanks guys!

Hey guys, sorry for not posting so long. I've had my arminjury (biceptendon) of my strongest gripping arm playing up again lately,

so I backed off for a bit. Last sunday I had my last training session, it was the same as the one on the 26th.

The problem is that I feel my arm when I do heavy negatives with the #4. Setting it agains my leg places a lot of stress on my arm, thus

in combination with some pullups which I tried a few weeks ago, the pain starts to come up again. tomorrow I'll see my doctor again as I want to know

for sure what the problem is, so I hope I'll get him to let me see a specialist. PT and rest didn't do much for me. Stupid, shouldn't have done

the pullups. I'm waiting now for the #3.5 to arrive, hopefully it serves me better with the negatives, as the #4 just causes my hands to open to quickly.

In the meantime, I've altered my bench for benchpressing, I've altered the legcurl attachement (which I never use) and in combination with an old rusty

metal tube, nuts and bolts, I now have my own 'secret weapon'! And man does it work great! Only 10 kg's on it and an TNS approach is almost to heavy!

The leverage is huge! I've made two photo's, they're in my gallery. Look it up if you want. I'm going to incorporate it for sure in my training.

This week I'm backing off, let's see next weekend what my recovery did. from there the training will be a lot more different with my new COC gripper and

my homemade 'secret weapon'.

Small adjustment in my story, this morning I discovered there are no photo's in my gallery anymore. Same for my reaction on the

secret weapon topic. So. You will have to take it from me that it works :-)

Yesterday evening 04-11 I had my first training with use of my SW.

After warming up:

3 single #3 attempts immediatly with CCS Right hand, Every time getting a little bit closer, I see that my problem is not in the sweep, the close for me relies now on the set and the final part of the close.

2 singles filed #2.5 CCS left hand, both closed! Left hand felt pretty strong!

After that I had to fiddle around with the SW to see and feel what works best and gives the best feeling.

Did a couple of holds for 10 secs with 12.5 kg's, funny to see that although my left hand is half a gripper behind on my right, it's at about the same strength on my SW.

The holds pretty fast went down after a few singles, my skin needs to get used to the heavy load. I tried a couple of full closes with only 5 kg's, and could only

get 4/5 GOOD reps per hand. Maybe this works pretty good for making my first three fingers stronger so that the pinky can give that final 'boost'. Carlos R told me he worked on that when training for his #3, so I'm taking that with me in my training.

Hands felt pretty sore this morning, so I'll give them at least two or three days rest now.

Still waiting for my #3.5. Should be halfway past the ocean right now :) Together with my SW, that will give my training a good boost I reckon.

This morning I tried some SW work with again, hands felt strong... I did 12,5 kg holds per hand. both hands got around 10 seconds, after that, my holds

went down super fast, there just wasn't any gas left in the tank.

Also my skin on my middlefinger hurts a bit from the pressure, so maybe some tape on the fingers when training SW wouldn't be

a crazy thing.

From there, left hand 2 singles filed #2.5 CCS, both almost closed. Again, although this morning my hands felt strong,

one day rest in between is just nog enough rest for me. The day before yesterday I did the CCS with the 2.5 lefty with still some power

left in the tank.

From there I made 2 singles attempt to close my choked adjustable around #3.5 level righty, but I just got the handles to move a bit, so I turned

them into forced negatives with holds. intensity was high though.

After that, 2 sets both hands with the SW for 4 reps, full closes with only 5 kg, the start being TERRIBLE hard!

All of my attemps were done with benchpress and abs in between.

Fall is kicking in here in Holland, my garage is getting a bit colder now! time for my gasheater to help keeping my trainingspace warm!

For now, at least four days rest. From there i'll pick up my strapholds and negative work again for a more structural workout. The SW

just made me want to fiddle around with it last trainingsessions. Hopefully my new #3.5 will arive soon....

I'm planning to make november a hard workout month and I'll see in december what a week rest will do.

Received my COC #3.5 this evening!

Last training was the 6th, so why not give it a shot this evening. It turned out to be a good training session.

Warm up with squats;

5 singles L and R #1, hands felt really smooth when doing this;

squats ATG 10x60 kg;

1 attempt CCS #3 for status quo righty, a very small small small gap! Maybe close next attempt...., but I will not do this. This was

my last attempt CCS for this month, from now on only singles MMS attempts with #3.5;

1 single left hand filed #2.5 CCS: shut.

squats ATG 100kg x 5;

1 attempt R #3.5 MMS, got it a fairly part beyond parallel, this gripper feels smooth! Turned into negative by the way, feels so much better than with my #4,

I just feel I'm getting much more with this gripper with negatives.

1 attempt L #3 MMS, quite the same story here, when the close stops, I turn it into a negative (close against leg and fight all the way open but still try to keep it closed);

Squats ATG 100kg x 5;

Repeated this about four times;

3 single holds L and R with SW, 1st 12,5kg, then 14,5kg holds, when opening, other hand assists in closing again;

Ended with pvc wristroller on bar in squatstands, both sides 2 times 40 kg's, rolled up till shoulderheight.

Hands feel still good! Still, my strength is down the drain.

Next, again no griptraining before sunday.

Today not that much special to report.

Warming up, getting the blood running with some light squats.

L and R 5 x #1 singles

App. 5 x R #3.5 singles deep set, turned into negatives. I've choked the #3.5 the last 2 singles btw. Planning to keep the choker on for a while.

App. 5 x L #3 singles deep set, turned into negatives.

Vulcan level 9 and 10 from parallel with strapholds 1 kg. App. 5 secs. L and R. 2 singles.

SW holds with 15 kg, trying to climb in weight every time, but 15 kg quickly forced my hands open, strength already through the toilet.

Finished off with 2 set of 10 x 15 kg wristcurls (underarm resting on leg and weight on loadingpin, I used a 'horseshoe' handle.

Reps really slow so I felt a nice burn. Not so much for strength but it still gives a nice pump to end the session.

I'm not doing that much with my overall body training, my right arm bicep tendonitis/arm injury is still bothering me. Don't feel it when doing

griptraining, but pulling excercises are out of the question... Monday 22 november I get to see a sports-specialist in the hospital, so I'm very curious

what the diagnosis will be and what I can expect as for rehab.

thanks for reading guys.

Yesterday evening a new session, I kept it short this time.

I did my training in my livingroom so no additional excersices.

warming up with hands in warm water and 5 singles L and R with #1.

R choked #3.5 turned into negative, hold as long as possible;

L #3 deep set, max effort, turned into negative, keeping it barely closed (with a few mm´s in between) for as long as possible;

Rest

choked Vulcan L and R level 9/10 straphold 10 kg;

Repeated this cycle app. four times.

end of session.

Didn't really take the time the last days to fill out my last training sessions, but here goes:

21-11

just a status quo.

No warm up, just wanted to see how my hands would react to sudden engagement.

Tried 4 CCS singles with my #3 right hand, all almost closed...turned into negatives...

left hand 4 attempts MM #3, turned into negatives...

Doing more then two heavy trainingsessions in one week really takes away my closing power, but with

the strength I have in my hands, I really try and focus on explosive all out singles.

That's that.

22-11

Gripsession with benchpress in between.

Warm up with #1 singles x 5 both hands;

Set 1:

R 1 x #3.5 MM set turned into negative;

L 1 x #3 MM set turned into negative;

Set 2:

R 1 x Vulcan Level 12 gold spring, left hand assists in close from parallel then keep it closed with straphold 1kg, 8 secs;

L 1 X the same, level 11, few secs;

Then both sets repeated, strapholds lose strength quickly;

Holds L and R with my SW, App. 14 kg's. 10 sec's, when opening, forced closed;

Leverage work with my heavy big old wooden hammer.

End session.

BTW, Finally been to a sports doctor today in the hospital. He looked at my arminjury and suspects there maybe has been a very small

tear in my right bicep tendon. But since there are a lot of muscles working in that area, he suggested making photos and an echo of my arm.

So that's on schedule for next week. I'm very curious what the diagnosis will be on that subject. Luckily It's not effecting my griptraining.
