Longest One Hand Hold For Inch 172?

Lately I have been wondering what the record is for holding the 172 lb Inch replica with one hand while standing erect?

Here is what Thomas Inch claimed:

"It is strange that no one has yet moved the bell off the ground- there is no trick whatever, and the Editor will tell you that when at Bradford, after some really good men had tried their hand, I not only picked the bell up but stood with it in my hand whilst I addressed the audience."

There is no mention of how long the address went on, but what is the longest time that you are aware of that someone has held the bell aloft with one hand?

Juha's done a strict (no tilt) hold of 18.5 seconds. However I wouldn't be surprised if one of the super elite thick bar guys (e.g. Rich Williams, Mike Burke, etc.) could to hold it for 30+ seconds. I think 1 minute is achievable.

I think if one went back and timed the Inch farmers walks from the Might Mitts a couple years back, that would give you some numbers as well. Farmers walk distances is another way to look at it, but given people move at different rates, it's not really the same.

I think Laine Snook would be your man for this record if he is still training. And I do not think it would be much of a competition. Maybe Chris James could get within close reach, but not too sure. I would fathom, given his past exploits with any heavy bell made, Laine could break the one minute barrier.

I could only dream of seeing a four-man competition for this title between Snook, Chris James, Burke, and Rich. In my opinion, the finishing order would be Snook, James, Williams, Burke. Possible flip-flop in last two but neither close to the top two.

I have it on rather poor authority that Inch held the bell for the entire duration of his performance of the of the Major General's Song from The Pirates of Penzance.

I know someone who held an Inch Replica (no tilt) for very close to a minute. I am not in contact with him anymore, but I know he said he was irritated that he couldn't hold it a full minute. His was with a deadlift to get it into position. The obvious point being that taking the Inch from a stand or using two hands to get it to the locked out position and then holding with one hand will yield significantly longer times.

You forgot one name that would in my opinion dominate all the names you mentioned and that is Brian Shaw.

This giants grip strength has not really been tested yet and who knows what he's got when trained for and challenged?

Some of the strongest mitts on the planet without a doubt!

Good to see them training together. Looks like a Blob getting some air time. I would think in no specific order Burke, Williams,, Shaw and Snook would battle it right to the end on a legit hold for time. As I mentioned years ago strength coach from Missouri deadlifted and while zig zagging through an NSCA exhibit hall ran out of space to walk right at 100 ' feet. His reply " my legs are tired".

Williams record carry of deadlifted and carried paired dumbbells around 70+ feet ( with turns not counted( 7-9 feet with each of 2 full turns each at least ) as distance might be the mark to shoot for. Great men of grip !

Joe, I would love to see what Shaw could do as well. But, I left him off the list because I have never seen him lifting or playing with the Inch DB very much. The only video I could locate was him carrying the Inch and a blob for about 50-60 feet together. Also, in that video, it appears he was resting the Inch on his thigh for a portion of the walk. Albeit, that video was about 6 years old, I am sure he could do better now. Like Tommy said, he just does not seem to focus as much on grip feats, so he is a little unproven in that area. Same could be said for Chris James I guess, but he is unbelievable at all forms of thick bar lifting. Given his most recent video footage, I truly believe Chris would post a WR axle pull.

Oops , please add my suggestion that Chris James may be the dark horse of the bunch I mentioned he is in a class of unworldly strength. Forgive my oversight to his unique power and ability.
