Vertical Grip Lift

Recommended Posts

this is also 2" but more grippy than then 2" Vbar. My current best is 213 with the 2"Vbar, with this I was able to lift up to 235 lbs +loading pin/atomik pipe (current body wt is 156)

Very strong lifting Evan!

I think the other main difference with that implement is it allows some tilt whereas the V bar does not.

Thank you Frank, good point about the tilt. I think I will spend some time training with this and see if my V bar lift improves. This is easier to carry around vs. the V bar.

I also have the 3.5 " one which is much wider/ difficult but I haven't used in a while. Now that I think about it that one might also help me a little bit with lifting the blob, even though the lifting mechanics are different.

For some reason my left is stronger at vertical grip lifts than my right, but my right is stronger at rolling handles and crush.

Those are some cool handles from Atomik Evan. I have their pumpkin hanging in the center of my hangboard.

I'm the same way, my vertical lifts are better left handed, as is my hub, but everything else is better right

Nice lifts Evan! My left hand is stronger at thick bar for me as my fingers are slightly longer on that hand.

Very strong !

You'll see lots of prs on the v bar !

I'm in the same boat my left is at least 20 lbs

Stronger than right on 2 " V bar

( not sure about the regular 1 " v bar though )

But the Right has always been stronger on Roling Thunder by 10 lbs or so

More strong vbar action, Evan! My left was also stronger on vbar - both 1" and 2" versions. I never broke 400lbs (best was @ 385lbs righty) righty, but did it by a good margin a few times lefty. I'm right handed and am stronger on everything else righty, except for hubs.

Thanks guys, I thought it was weird that my left is stronger with Vbar but maybe it's not uncommon. It's interesting how our body works.

Very strong grip Evan! specially at that bodyweight!

thank you brother, this last one was easier to grip with 1.5" diameter.

Ben, I just realized you are very close to the world record for the 1 " v bar.

:bow

I also noticed that's more than 100lbs difference from your 2"Vbar number there which is still very impressive. Is the 1" Vbar a lot easier to grip?

Ben has the record. The 1" is a lot easier to grip but the skin toughness becomes a big issue.

awesome, I thought I saw someone before at 400 or so. It must be tough on the skin but I'd love to give the 1" a try at some point.

Thanks, Evan! Technically, my best 1" vbar pull (in my garage) was 406lbs. My best 2" vbar pull (in comp) was 310lbs. It was mis-weighed (see the thread titled "Public and Private", at least I think that's where I detail why the weight is mislabeled) as a tad over 300lbs.

The 1" vbar is just a smaller diameter. I actually feel like the 2" vbar is very "easy" to grip. It's quite comfortable. Most guys (me included, for the record) think the 1" vbar is pretty painful when you go north of 300lbs by a large margin. I can tell you that without exaggeration, exceeding 400lbs felt like it was going to literally "de-glove" my hand. It is nothing I care to ever train up to again. I was a big fan of the 1" vbar though. Just don't feel like kicking my butt to get strong on it again and then not having a comp to test it in, or any reason to make it somewhat worth training again.

I'm definitely not the only guy to pull 400lbs+ on the 1" vbar. I think Adam Glass did. I'd guess that Andrew Durniat did. Theo Burggraaf probably pulled 400lbs with both hands. Mobster. Chad Woodall. There are others who were very close and might've gone 400lbs+ without any fanfare. Also, hook gripped doesn't count (for what we're talking about) so don't pay attention to the IAWA or USAWA records on 1" vbar. No dig on the USAWA - I am a current member. But they allow the hook grip on 1" vbar. Which no mainstream grip contests allow at the moment. When I set the USAWA 1" vbar records in my weight class, I didn't use the hook grip. Putting that out there because a few on this forum have asked me repeatedly about why I used a hook grip to set those records. I would've pulled 100lbs more if I had used a hook grip. So that's pretty easy to debunk.

Even some guys with crazy tough hands occasionally just don't have the will or the anatomical setup to lift big weights on the 1" vbar. Big Steve McGranahan is one that immediately comes to mind. I seem to remember he had issues with the 1" vbar. Not due to lack of strength or hand toughness is what I'm getting at.

Nice lifting, I never tried this lift, whats the difference if you only grab the loading pin and lift that way? I'm going to try that.

Yes it's very common for people to be better with different hands and legs in different disciplines. I think it's more rare for people to be extremely one sided in everything they do.

thanks, you could try with just the loading pin but I think the loading pin is harder to grip.

  • 2 weeks later...

my new PR with the 2"Vbar, I believe the 228 is a good lift, the 233 attempt is not good, I have no control of the bar on the way down

Good Evan, those looked pretty easy for you

Thanks Tom! I think my technique improved a bit which allowed me to go a bit heavier.
