First Attempt At The Red Nail

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, so tonight I wrapped up a red and had my first dance with it. I've been training strictly in single imp's and today was no different. It stopped me at the crush and man, I must say this thing is a monster at those last two inches. Here's the vid, just posting it because I usually have nothing worth wasting your time with. Also, sorry about the yelling and grunting...I know I look stupid. Got caught in the moment.

You'll crush that soon enough. Nice work. Never got past reversing a blue here, red always laughed at me.

Good job man. Hit it quicker next time of possible. Keep the metal warm. You hurt that thing.

Really good man. The kink is by far the hardest part of the Red, so you are close to a full bend. At 4", you may actually be better off working on your open hand sweep rather than trying to crush it from that far out. I can't say for sure, as everyone's hands are different. It did look like you got decent finger interlock, but only you know what feels right in your hands. Later, as my hands got very hard, I was able to hook the ends very high in the webbing sometimes for a crush from very far out. Its really up to your anatomy. Either way, a few ISO sessions and you will be finishing them off. I know your gripper crush will be plenty strong.

Something I learned from Tommy: when you have your fingers interlocked for the crush, a. make sure they are also well chalked, b. squeeze your fingers also, don't just push through the palms; you will give yourself extra crushing power.

^This. The red is yours.

As for the yelling and grunting, far too many people live their lives without passion and excitement. If you really put the effort forth, any accomplishment should be celebrated. Yell and grunt away. It makes the videos awesome.

Awesome job Anthony, kinked looked nice and strong and the rest will come very soon.

Each time you bend one it only gets easier!

Thank you guys! It felt really, really great when the bar started to move; was a huge confidence booster. I didn't have much trouble with the kink but once it got to that point it just wasn't gonna move, I could've kept hitting it all night long (no pun intended) to no avail lol. Next time I'm not gonna let it cool down and I'll see if I can do more damage to it.

Great advice, thank you Shark. I definitely would have liked to have gotten the ends a little bit closer to each other before I started the crush because my fingers are short and I didn't get all I could have out of it. So yes, I need to get better at the sweep. I like that Tommy idea too, I don't do that naturally so next time I'll make a point of it to squeeze my fingers in.

As far as chalk goes, I learned that from what you've written....I basically cover both sides of the pad in chalk before each bend and then bathe my hands in it. It really does make a huge difference.

Technique is looking much better. But remember to keep that chin tucked. The third hit you forgot and it cost you some movement. Also don't be afraid to take the first layer of wraps off. At the point you got stuck that's usually where the first layer should come off. It makes room for your fingers. I think you could have gotten the bar further if you did that. This is very important, take this next thing seriously, invest in a mouth guard if you don't have one. I couldn't tell if you were wearing one like mine or if that was your teeth being clenched. I feel like a mouth guard gives me a little more power along with peace of mind.

But all in all you are progressing very quickly.

I did this just from watching EJs videos, and it gives me immense peace of mind. Before, I was POSITIVE that if I tried to put a little more power into the bar, I'd end up chipping a tooth. I almost bite through the guard now, but its still better than the grinding.

Plus they start at like 8 bucks on Amazon. Maybe that's all you need, and you'll destroy the bar even more next time. Looking good, man.

Ej,

Can you clarify by first layer of wraps? This was in single imp's not double....or do you mean like take the band off and unroll the wrap a little bit?

Watching the video back the first time, I said to myself, EJ's gonna yell at me for that chin LOL. I made a conscious effort the first two hits and then that went to hell. I need to focus and keep that chin tucked the whole time. Also, the mouthguard is a GREAT idea, not only for bending, but for grippers too. I tend to lock my jaw when training them as well.

Thanks man!

My mistake bro I thought this was tiny doubles, I watched it on my iPhone. I'm still working, but had to see this video asap. So the clarity sucks on this tiny screen. This is the reason I always watch videos from my desktop. Sorry bro.

New idea, the point you are stuck at you could try to move the wraps up on the bar a little more. And have more hand on the bar and wrap, that might get you past the sticking point. You need to experiment. For me I have found when I get to a sticking point it's better to make my elbow more horizontal than pointing down. Some reason my leverage gets a little better and I can move it past the stick point. Remember your sticking point may only be a few mm. By that I mean you may only have to move the bar a few mm before you get big moevement on it.

I gotcha, thanks EJ! Makes sense, elbows horizontal would activate the more powerful chest, as opposed to tucked which would simulate more of a close grip bench and hit the weaker triceps more. Will try this next time :D

Anthony man you deserve this brother! Awesome attempt! So close. Next attempt you will get this!!!

Hell yeah!! awesome brother!

Thank you guys!! :mosher
