Training Bite Strength

I saw a thing on the Internet about old time strongmen lifting weight with their jaws or biting through nails.

How can one safely train for greater bite strength?

Maybe try eating a lot of Beef Shanks or some other tough cut of meat. :D

They typically would lift whatever item they were lifting with a leather strap attached to a chain, from what I understand. They could clamp down on the leather without hurting themselves...

As to the biting through nails part, I have no idea. I started a thread on that a while back though...

I've done it before and think that a much safer way to do this rather than weight lifting is to chew on tough things like tough roots and whatnot, but not hard enough to damage the teeth.

And don't bend quarters with your teeth. Had to cap a cracked molar just the other day.

Edit because I didn't proof read:

I've done teeth lifting before but think that there are much safer ways to train the jaw, such as chew on tough things; tough roots, hard rubber, etc. If your gums are sore then it's probably a sign that your teeth are getting looser in the socket.

Biting through metal is clearly the stupidest thing I've ever heard

Teeth being loose in the socket doesn't sound good at all.

I disagree. You can condition bones, skin and tendons. You can't condition teeth.

How do you significantly strengthen bones like that? If possible?
