Hub Lift

There seems to be slight carryover to similarly narrow pinch and odd shapes when rock climbing but that's about it. I view it as specialized training for that specific lift.

The hub is an odd lift. I haven't seen any carryover to any other pinch item.

If you want to get better at different types of pinch tools, you need to train with a plan that revolves around specificity.

I would have thought that the hub will increase thumb strength and, therefore, cause improvement in any pinch. Am I wrong about this? If so, I'll probably cut down on the hub with a view to eventually dropping it.

No matter the tool, if you are using the hub, you can still strengthen the thumb with it. The problem is that it doesn't translate over to other pinch tools. When I was lifting 120+ lbs on the IronMind pinch block with one hand, I could not even come close to lifting 160 lbs on the Euro with two hands, or lift two 45lb plates with one hand.

When I mentioned specificity I meant that what tools you want to get better at, you need to train those. (If you want to get better at grippers, train grippers.)

It's the same principle around the olympic lifts; you may have 100's of exercises to chose from but the moves that you want to focus on are what's going to be the main movements of what you are wanting to improve upon.

No matter the tool used, it has to be in relation to what said goal you have set in place.

Isn't the hub more about finger strength than thumb strength?

I'm weak at the thumb if I compare to friends but my hub strength is a lot stronger than any of them.

It's about both, and technique. You are only as strong as the weakest link involved in a movement. It's near impossible for any pinch movement to have absolutely 0 carryover to any other pinch movement but also hard to actually test given that few people only do 1 movement as a routine and yet keep the technique solid for all other movements. It doesn't exist in a vacuum and if anyone claims it does they lack understanding of basic biomechanics. That being said, some things have a hell of a lot more impact than others on various movements. Though I notice slight impact on specific pinch widths it is slight, almost to the point of not mentioning. As John and I both said, specificity is key to gains (beyond about age 12, but I'm not going to get into that, if you want to understand read The Sports Gene).

How much carryover it has is probably somewhat individual just as training response itself is individual, some people are super high responders to training and some don't respond much at all but I've never heard someone claim it has much carryover so there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that you just focus on it if you want to be better at it and on pinch if you wish to be better at pinch.
