exarmy
just wondering how these 2 compare? my goal is to close the #3, how much weight would you say I am going to have to be able to pick up on the rolling thunder before i can do this? currently i can close the 2.5 and i can pick up 70kg, although I've only used it in one session
JoshW
Rolling thunder will kill your gripper strength, lifting 80 or 90kg won't guarantee closing the #3 I closed the #3 from concentrating on grippers alone
Royz
It's a bit like saying how much do you need to be able to deadlift before you can bench 150kg? There is probably a little bit of carryover between the two but basically the only common factor is that you need to be strong.
FJM
In my experience training with other grip tools, like rolling thunder make setting and sweeping of gripper feel easier. For handles touching crush you need gripper training. I do not have any experience about grip machines but imagine that those could help too. Juha Harju
Blob training and narrow pinch is better than RT if your goal is to close #
Hubgeezer
Odd Haugen has done what, 270 or so on the Rolling Thunder? He cannot come close to closing a 3. I think there is less correlation between grippers and Rolling Thunder than just about any other two grip disciplines out there.
climber511
The day you close your #3 - turn around and do a max RT lift - then you'll know. Seriously the two have nothing in common.
filipvk
I remember that Wes was able to lift 250 + lbs with the RT and to close the Elite with no problems
jvance
It's the two are very specific strengths and not related. A couple years ago I was clicking out 5+ reps on a 149 #3, but could only pull 155-160 on the RT, now I'm around 200 on the RT but can barely get a double on the same 3. Gripper training carries over to very little unless you're talking about newb gains, in which case some grip training is better than none. It all depends on individual goals
king crusher
I've done 200 on old handle and 197 on my new handle. My max gripper is my 166 elite
bencrush
No correlation between RT and grippers. I haven't seen quite as extreme a difference between RT and gripper closing ability as the Odd Haugen reference, but I watched an ex-coworker pull (he had never touched an RT before, but he trained strongman) 222lbs on the RT both left and right hands. Then a few minutes later fail to close my average #2 on the first three attempts and then barely got it closed on the 4th attempt.
Old Dax
Juha Harju, when you say narrow pinch how narrow?
Hubgeezer
An observation: lt's pretty unanimous that gripper closing strength and rolling thunder ability don't have much correlation. Don't see "unanimous" that often on Internet forums
Alawadhi
I remember that Wes was able to lift 250 + lbs with the RT and to close the Elite with no problems Wes was a freak of nature. The dude wasn't even 19 and he lifted the blob plus 5 pounds cold without even knowing what it was. After that attempted the #4 and got it to 1/16 that's very very very close. Bent the shiny bastard fast in IM pads. 250+ on RT.Closed a narrow BBpro TNS. Much more all with some to little training. I wonder where he is now? How is he doing? Cannon
I have closed endless #3s and never lifted more than about 140 on RT. That's not a typo. My gripper max is WAY above my all-time RT max.

My gripper max is WAY above my all-time RT max. I have experienced similar. Gripper max: 135 RT max: 130 And I consider my thick bar to be competitively better than my grippers. Maybe it's a small guy thing.
