Never Drop Another Deadlift

Strength coaches and personal trainers will agree that Grip Strength is a limiting factor in many of their clients’ lifts.

In fact, probably the most severely neglected part of the Grip is the thumb. This is because most conventional strength training methods do very little for thumb strength.

And it’s not really your “Fault” that the thumb gets neglected so badly. After all, most of the pulling work that you do focuses on the fingers and the thumb is just left hanging out. Dumbbell Rows, Barbell Rows, Pull-downs, Pull-ups, Cable Rows – in all of these movements the fingers are taxed, but the thumb is not.

This is a shame because the thumb is supposed to be your main reinforcement for Grip Strength when the going gets tough.

For instance, in a heavy deadlift, your thumb should be locked in tight over your first two fingers in order to secure your grip, so you don’t drop the bar.

But since most lifters lack thumb strength, they do not get this benefit and end up dropping big pulls.

Fortunately, if you have weak thumbs, it is something you can remedy fairly quickly with simple-to-build, home made strength equipment.

One classic way of training for thumb strength is by doing Hub Lifting. This is usually done by gripping a barbell plate by the center of the plate, on the inside, around the loading hole of the plate. This region is called a Hub, just like the center of a wheel.

These days, hub lifting plates can be very hard because most are made very skinny so that more plates can be loaded onto a bar sleeve. This makes it very tough to lift them by the hub.

There is of course another way to use hub lifting as way to strengthen the thumb. Just build your own Hub Lifting Device! After all, when your thumb is strong, you are able to complete heavier pulls, perform more reps, and as a result put on more muscle and build more strength.
