Could you tell us a little about your background in lifting?

Started like many, reading Muscle&Fiction and trained as such through college. Finally researched a better way which led me to kettlebells in 2005, kettlebells introduced me to grip and the true strength sports of weightlifting and powerlifting. From there I have continued to grow in knowledge and experience. I have competed in everything from olympic distance triathlons and 100-mile mountain bike races to highland games, strongman, oly lifting, kettlebell sport, grip. I've wanted to experience it all.

How did you get into grip training?

At the RKC i heard of this #3 gripper thing and that it apparently was a notable feat. I felt it was an attainable way for me to market myself as a strength coach and be recognized.

You are now a GripBoard Mash Monster, what would you recommend to those aspiring to close this gripper?

Train to be strong everywhere. Focus on the aspect of grip you wish to dominate, but do not neglect the rest of your body. My grip is strongest when my deadlift and squat are strongest.

What does your current grip routine look like?

Double overhand deadlifts on monday and grippers with plate pinches and RT on Thursday with squats.

How has your grip routine changed since you first started training your grip?

I am more focused on the aspects of grip rather than the multitude of events; i train plate pinches and let it carry over to 2hp and blob's rather try to train plates, 2hp and blob together and wonder why I'm overtrained and going backwards.

There seems to be a significant variation in the frequency of grip workouts among trainees even with the common goal of ultimate grip strength. Have you experimented with workout frequency and it’s affect on your training?

Less is more with me. At first I was able to train with greater frequency, but the implements were lighter and easier, and so was recovery. Now I train with a 170#+ gripper for reps and it taxes me more.

What are your favorite grip exercises?

Double overhand deadlifts are my favorite, both standard and thick bar.

What kind of starting routine would you recommend for a trainee new to grip training?

I think grippers are the easiest in-road to grip. plate pinching probably has the greatest grip-sport carryover.

Who do you most admire in gripdom?

Jedd Johnson - he has paved the way and given so much knowledge. He is an amazing competitor and incredibly strong.

If you were to start over again with your grip training, what would you do differently?

Be more consistent in my yearly training, i'm getting better with my consistency and the results are showing it.

What do you believe is the most difficult grip exercise?

Pinch is my nemesis, but grippers are way more technical than most give credit.

What are some of your personal bests in grip exercises?

Gripper - 206.6# with block set, DO Axle - 474#, 2hp - 235#

What do you believe is the most common mistake made by new grip trainees?

Giving up too soon.

What do you consider to be the greatest grip feats of all time?

Jedd 2hp world record at 270#.

Do you have any parting advice for readers?
