Does anyone know the poundage of the BB Pro .331?

Is that at the WLW site?

The #4 is rated at 365 by IM...and the Pro is supposed to be even tougher. I know the rankings at the WLW site are anywhere from 40-50 lbs under comparable IM ratings.

From Tetting himself............

The Ironmind gripper closing poundage rate is measured from a different

point on the handle than where the Beefs are measured.

The Gripboard figured it was a better thought to go by wire sizes, spring

depth set and handle spread, to determine the toughness of a gripper

and where they may line up

Newly updated list:

Poundages are to be IGNORED...estimates only to be used for comparison's only and remember GRIPPERS VARY!!! Also manufacturing tolerances on the wire used for gripper has a +/- .002 tolerance so your gripper may differ!!

I took the liberty to update this chart from the FAQ section with

poundages based on the wire size differences.

The following is a list I got from Warren Tettings showing the wire sizes used for the Beef Builder, MMG and Captains of Crush grippers. These poundages  are based on the differences in the reported wire sizes using the IM grippers as a base.

Remember that all grippers vary except for the actual MM cert grippers,

these numbers are ESTIMATES of the actual poundages necessary!

.225 BB Beginner………………………………………………................100 lbs

.225 COC T    …………………………………………………................ 100 lbs

.235 COC #1  ………………………………………………….................140 lbs

.235 BB Advanced ………………………………………………..............140 lbs

.250 BB Super Advanced ………………………………………...........173 lbs

.260 BB Master …………………………………………………................195 lbs

I'm having a HG100-HG300 (almost no difference between HG100 and HG150), I aslo have the CoC#1 and CoC#2 but I would like something that falls in between HG250/CoC#2 and my HG300.

Does the BBSM fall in between the CoC#2 and my HG300 or is it about the same as my HG300?

Regards

My understanding of your preference sounds like you want something between an Iron Mind #2 and an HG300. I presume your HG250 is easier than your IM #2. I presume also that your HG300 is newer, and therefore a "tougher" one than they had been running, which would make it around a 2.75 by my estimate. I had heard from someone on this board that his HG300 was easier than my SuperMaster when he gave it a squeeze. My new HG300(purchased May of 2005) was, as I said, a 2.75, maybe 2.80.

Here are your options:

Beef Builders Super Master, which has been reported from being a 2.2 to 2.7. My opinion of mine is that it is a 2.4.

PDA 262, which prides themselves on accuracy, and it was targeted to be exactly between a 2 and a 3. I call mine a 2.3.

RB210, which I have the experience of two. I have a seasoned one acquired via trade that I call a 2.2 to 2.3. On Saturday, I tried an unseasoned one, never really used, that I failed to close, 1/32 of an inch away. That would make it a 2.75-2.8, as that very day, I easily closed my favorite gripper, my Super 2, which I rate a 2.6.

In terms of surest thing, and easiest to get, I would lean towards the BBSM.

Your last option would be to go with a RB240N(narrow), which might translate into the mid to high 2s, and or go with a Beef Builders Grand Master that was designed to be narrower spread. and you might get to the mid 2s.

I agree with Hubgeezer. My BBSM is between my 2005 IM #2 and 2005 IM #3. I also have a BBGM which is between my BBSM and the #3. Both of my BB grippers have the standard 2.75" spread.

Thankyou Porkchop and Hubgeezer for your thoroughly answers to my question. Looks like it's gona be the BBSM for me then.

The only thing that concerns me is that my HG300 was bought in 2004 and maybe it therefor isn't a hard but a weak HG300 I have (which menas that it is me that is weak ;) , and also culd mean that the BBSM will be as my HG300?). Cause I don't even get it to parallell altough I'm less than a millimiter from closing the HG250/CoC#2.

I just picked up a HG300 and it is about the same as my BBGM. My BBSM is easier than either of those, but harder than my #2. Here is a list of my grippers and how they rate in order of difficulty.

2005 IM #1

2005 BBM / 2003 IM #2 (both about the same difficulty)

2005 IM #2 (definately harder than 2003 IM #2)

2005 BBSM

2005 HG300 / 2005 BBGM (both about the same difficulty)

2005 HG400

2005 IM #3

2005 HG500

2005 IM #4

Hope this helps.

HG500 is easier than the #4? Has anyone closed the HG500 yet with a MMS?

I think Greg made a typo... a normal HG500 is much harder than a #4. :whistel I only own 2 grippers that are harder than my #4: the RB365 and the HG500.

You are correct. I made a mistake. My HG500 was harder than my #4's. I saw was because I not longer own it.

Paul, thanks for compiling this list. It's really helping me plan. I can't afford to buy the wrong grippers, or too many needless grippers. Thanks ;)

My question is regarding my 2006 CoC2 versus my 2006 HG300. I feel like they are very close, where others have the HG300 compared to their BBGM, which is harder than a #3. I really don't think I just gained enough strength that I didn't notice I jumped all those grippers. Is it possible I just got a crap HG300? The spread is barely 2.5", which was also disappointing. I don't think it seasoned yet, because right now I only have about 20 attempts on the HG300.

My question is how I can figure this out? The bathroom scale thing didn't really work for me. I suppose I could buy a CoC3 and see where I'm at...

The HG stuff that I have seems to be be all over the place poundage wise. My hg300 is between my BBSM and #3 based on the bath scale and calcs it was around 2.8 and the bbsm 2.5 But I also have a HG350 that is exactly the same pressure wise as the HG300 because of the mounting and spread. When you used the scale what readings do you get with the HG300? I think mine was around 162lbs and my #3 was a bit over 170lbs for comparasion.

Go to the BB's...the Hg's as Aaron has said can vary WIDELY. A BBSM by wire is a 2.7 and a GM is a 3.0 Practical experience has showed that a BBSM can vary from 2.4 to 2.8 and the GM from 2.6 to tougher than a 3. So my BBGM is a bit tougher than my BBSM which was a "Cert" gripper from Warren Tetting...so it is a 2 3/4 spread with a flush mount...another words right where it should be. The BBGM should be a 3 (it is the same wire size) but spread, mounting depth and steel composition can all make a difference.

Grippers VARY..not because they want too it is part of the manufacturing process, they would cost far more to be made to more exact tolerances.

Good Luck!!

The new Ironmind tweener grippers need to be added, so I got the micrometer out and measured the spring sizes:

1.5 is a 0.250 guage

2.5 is a 0.273 gauge

3.5 is a 0.294 gauge

This may need some adjusting. Maybe Greg Amidon could supply some input, as he is calibrating some grippers, by measuring the poundages at the end of the handles. :cool
