Evan Raftopoulos
I have a friend that I'm trying to get into grip sport, she is training for american ninja warrior and she is also a climber so she has good baseline grip strength for female. It's her bday today and I wanna buy her first gripper as a gift. What would you say is a good working and maybe goal gripper for someone like her? I was thinking of IM sport or trainer or ghp1 or 2, however ghp knurling might be too aggresive for someone who is just starting out. Next time we train I'm gonna get baseline measures with hand dynamometer, euro pinch and 2" crusher and monitor her progress, hopefully get her to compete next time with me. I'll also have her try bending a 3/16" steel bars, which btw two other female friends of mine were able to bend double overhand!! I wanted to get a video of them doing it but didn't let me :P Personally I'm exited to see more females getting into grip sport and bending.

I could be biased because my daughter (at 13yo) TNS's a trainer her first try. Her previous exercise to that was riding a bike or holding a pencil. Basically, I'd get her something you think she can't close...so it's a challenge. My opinion of course.

acorn
She may be able to close a Trainer right off the bat. I have seen that a few times.
Cannon
She may be able to close a Trainer right off the bat. I have seen that a few times. Yeah, Kristy (my wife) is very strong all around in the gym but never specifically trained grip. She crushed a Trainer first try. She can get a TOOOOOOON of movement out of the #1. Not quite closed though.
Justin Matney
My wife also smashed a trainer first try, no set. Got the #1 to parallel. She also palmed a 20 lb kettlebell, slick as a ribbon. Edited November 23, 2015 by jmatney
acorn
My wife has closed my Trainer a couple times over the years though never has specifically trained grip nor really any weight training. She used to cycle competitively and was on the Tennis team in HS many years ago as well as used to do Aikido. If she even practiced setting she could probably be reasonably consistent closing it. Start with a Trainer I would say at least. - Aaron
Hubgeezer
If you were getting just one gripper, I would go with the Trainer. The comments by the others, well, they (the experiences with women newbie gripsters) are just not "normal". And if she can close it already, so what? It's better than giving her something that she cannot do. If she wants to pursue it further, she will, and won't need any outer force for motivation. I guess it's really dependant upon your mindset then. I've never had much use for reps. Once I've closed a gripper I want to move forward. Sure a max close could be CNS/perfect set related...but there is no such thing as a fluke gripper close.
wobbler
Don't forget the 0.5 Also, easier silvis adjustables on sale at cpw. Less aggressive knurling than coc, too sharp can be a big turn off.
Chez
My sister closed the trainer MMS no problem first time she tried with no prior training. I think I just coached her on how to position it. She then tried either the .5 or #1 and came very very close.
Fist of Fury
Just let her try the dynamometer first then you can see approximately which gripper she would benifit the most of. Just compare your own results on the dynamo vs gripper strength. If I would guess, I think the Trainer would be good since she's been climbing. Otherwise I would guess the Sport. I don't think a #1 is a good gift if you're only going with one gripper.
avasatu
It seems to me that standard grippers are too wide for the average female hand. Is there a way to circumvent this?
wobbler
Yes, silvis adjustables

climber511
I think when looking at this - you need to consider the individual. If you give her something she can't close - will she look at it as a challenge - or just say the heck with it and move along? If you give her a trainer - will closing it fire her up and make her want more? The personality of the person is a factor that only you might answer and should be considered. king crusher
I've seen a couple girls close an hg200 without any teaching on setting. Most couldn't though.

Evan Raftopoulos
thanks guys, well, I think it's very impressive for a female to TNS a trainer, especially first time. I gave my trainer to two female coworkers and couldn't close it with no set or MMS. Sometimes trying MMS for the first time it's harder than TNS because you are not used to using both hands like that. So I saw my friend yesterday and gave her my CoC sport which was my lightest gripper and which I haven't been using at all. She was able to TNS with the R first try 1-2 reps and with the L after a few attempts and teaching her how to find that good spot in her hand for the gripper. So this is perfect for her. I told her to do reps /singles and see if she can do up to 15-20 per hand per workout for now no matter how long it takes. We'll meet again later this week to try the other stuff as well.
Evan Raftopoulos
I told her by the end of next year she will be TNSin the CoC4 like it's nothing.
Evan Raftopoulos
We met again today to try euro pinch, rolling thunder/2" crusher, grippers and bending. Her crushing grip has already improved (cns adaptation?), she's been doing what I told her with the coc sport the past two days. So today she came very close to MMSing my trainer 56lb and tetting beginner 57lb, perhaps 2-3 mm from closing them. With no set she took the trainer to 10mm from closing. I believe she will be closing the trainer easy MMS once she gets more used to setting the gripper and within weeks or couple months TNSing it. Dynamometer after 3 attempts each side she got 78 pounds of force both hands. For her age/gender anything more than 75lb is considered strong according to some data I found. These were the rest of her numbers, no chalk was used and we stopped the test when she felt it was her max, we didn't test beyond that so it might have been her submax for some: Rolling thunder 73.35 both hands 2” crusher 86.2 lb with L 2hand pinch euro 71.60lb She bent DO the Silvis S5 nail which is a bit thicker than 3/16" easy twice!
