How Does This Lift Help Overall Body Strength?

I've been doing clean and presses with my homemade 3 1/2 thick barbell. I do NOT have big hands, so it is extremely difficult to hold on to.

Does doing cleans with such a thick bar serve much benefit to my grip?

If I could only do one grip exercise it would be axle cleans. Biggest bang for your buck IMO

Right now I can do 90 lbs, I did that in my workout yesterday. Though I think I can probably do more. what makes it so hard is that my hands are not big at all, and are probably considered small compared to most grown men. my original goal was just to deadlift big weight on but now I'm doing the clean and presses too.
