The Gripmas Carol 2012

Well I survived another Gripmas Carol - but I am beat. Unreal! Unreal! Unreal! describes the day. New World Record Pinch - again - I've lost track of how many years straight now we have had one (or more) WRs set here in my little garage. Great performances. We used Andrews laptop for scoring and he is driving home with it right now - I'm sure he will post everything very soon. Anyway

Brad Ardrey won the overall. More to follow when Andrew gets time.

Which WR and who set it?

I want to say Thank You to everyone who attended - I couldn't have ever done it without all the help from everyone. Loading, score keeping - helping move everything around - everything you all did. Thank You!

That is just crazy. I know a lot of guys who can't or struggle deadlifting that on an olympic bar.

Not too long ago Kody was one of those guys. He still has a ways to go to catch up to his grip strength, but he's obviously doing something about it. He managed something like 370ish on the axle and 3 solid attempts at 389 clearly inhibited by his deadlifting ability. Very glad I was there to see him perform.

Also, anyone who didn't make it, weighted-light-switch accidents notwithstanding, missed quite a show. I truly hope the afterparty videos make it onto the internet. All of them, even the Paul Knight video.

270 just blows my mind. Kody's got something figured out!

Especially if he was, as I suspect, competing in the 93k class. He might have something of the perfect build for grip strength competitions with weight classes, tall and lean (from what I have read). Obviously not heavily muscled if he struggled deadlifting 389 pounds. This is probably why we tend to see climbers dominate lighter weightclasses rather than powerlifters.

It is people like Kody that reminds us that we are still at the early stages of exploring the upper limits in grip strength.

This is one of the great mysteries of life, putting your hands through extreme training with seemingly no issues only to injure them while grabbing a cup of coffee or something similar. It happens all the time to me as well. These unexplained injuries do not seem to last long though and they often disappear with hard training I have noticed, ignoring the pain. It is all very strange.

Apparently there is something to ignoring the pain, although I don't necessarily recommend it. Having injured my left bicep (brachialis probably) back in July clearing the floor with a routine atlas stone, I was unable to reverse curl even five pounds without significant pain. Hammer curls weren't much better. I tried babying it, flushing it with blood regularly, massage, etc, but it just wouldn't improve. Well, two weeks ago I had grown so fed up with the annoyance of it all that I did the equivalent of throwing your wrench across the garage when you discover your car can't be fixed with the tools you own: I did max effort hammer, bicep, and reverse curls. The first sets hurt the worst, but by the third I was feeling better. Next morning I woke up miraculously healed! Perhaps I was just breaking up scar tissue. i don't know. Makes me wonder if I could have gone on the rest of my life with that seemingly permanent injury.

Jedd, sorry you had to miss the contest like that. That's always a heartbreak. But I suspect your forearm will be better in no time.

Sounds like Chris promoted another great event! And congrats to Brad for his victory!

Geipmas was awesome this year like always! Chris put on a great comp and with all the help it ran great! Congrats to Kody Burns for setting a new 2HP record with a lift of 270.52 and Big Brad Ardrey for the win!!! # guys hit a 223 gripper in a choker and Brad scared the crap out of a 232. 3 guys pulling over 400 on the axle !!!! I didn't do as well as I hoped but it is what it is. I was happy to be there to see all the crazy stuff go down first hand. We will see if and video of Mr knight finds its way onto youtube in the after comp craziness . :)

It was a real bad day condition wise for pinch But Kody still did it up big!

Dude, that was an awesome Pinch, my man! Congratulations again. Monster! I think you would have had 275. Did you try any extra lifts?

Historic lift Kody!

Looks like Andrew started off just a bit too high on his axle attempts. That's never a fun feeling.

I'm amazed by a lot of these numbers!

Kody had some balls when you look at his attempts. Like a 30# jump for the record! He must have been making similar lifts in training? It would be interesting to hear the story behind his progress and this amazing lift!

I can't speak to Kody's training but I don't think he had pinched this much weight till the comp. A small group of us egged him on to try the record. He was going to go for 254. We were like you have the event win wrapped up already your last attempt with 245 looked like me puling 145 go big or go home. It was a crap day condition wise for pinch I think he was more shocked then we were! It was just awesome!!

I'm at the grandkids and don't have the stats with me but yes Kody was in the 93s - his width was 52 I'm pretty sure. If I'm wrong I'll post after I get home.

Kody had it won at 235. It didn't seem to be a great day for the traditionally top-end guys, so Kody would've had a now obviously-ridiculously easy win when he pulled 235. He made it look easy of course. People started yelling, "why don't you just go for the record?" half-jokingly. Kody just smiled his humble smile and decided to add 10lbs for 245 which, again, went up very easy. He used 3 attempts at this point in a 4 attempt event, and once that information was known to everyone else, we all started telling him to go for the record. "Throw 270 on there," said someone, "If you're going to go to Vegas," said Andrew, "Then go to Vegas." I don't think anyone in the room truly thought he would pull 270, but after seeing his previous attempts the thought of him doing so was on everyone's mind. The collective spirit of competition and comradery in the room after Kody's 245 could've won a small war, and so it did. Ultimately I think Doc was the one that talked Kody into it. 270.52 was loaded on the device with seemingly little care given to how far over 270 it was, so long as it was over. Kody began preparing himself, and by this time the room had fallen relatively quiet, each person hoping to see something they hadn't before. Kody stepped onto the platform, and a few of us began shouting words of support. He seemed focused on the goal once half-jokingly spouted off not even 15 minutes prior as he prepped the pinch surface. Then the moment came. Kody stood in position and reached for the device. The room was quickly getting ready to boil over with enthusiasm. Kody grabbed the device and looked forward, possibly unable to hear the roars of fellow competitors and spectators. I watched as Kody gripped, and the areas around his knuckles flashed white as happens during a pinch lift. To, I think, everyone's surprise, including Kody's, he had broken 270 from the floor. The moment of pure awe an instant after 270 started rising was palpable. The room, that only seconds prior was in an uproar of enthusiasm, once again fell silent. Even Kody sensed it as he seemed to pause the weight's eventual rise just to experience the atmosphere at that exact moment, perhaps taking an unexpectedly-important snapshot memory of every minute detail of those few seconds like a child who finds porn for the first time. When the device hit 16.5" Kody let loose a roar you don't often hear outside of these moments of utter victory. Everyone exploded in cheer, still boggled by what they had just witnessed, a relative newcomer destroying the 2HP record previously held and pushed by the same handful of people who had dedicated years to it's craft. As Mikael said, it's the people like Kody and moments like these that help remind you of what's still out there to do and how far you can push yourself.

Congratulations Kody.
