Ironmind Gold Nail

317 posts in this topic

some months back when i started bending, i was able to bend the red. a few of the guys mentioned me bending a gold nail.. needless to say i was flattered and all, but it darn sure wasnt gonna happen then.. i gave it a couple strong runs a few times.. then, due to the length of the gold, i hurt my shoulder trying. hints why i havent done any DO bends in awhile..

recent events have inspired me to get back DO bending in between grip workouts. seems the time off has given the shoulder time to heal and made me a bit stronger. (as i have only ever "wobbled" a gold) i figured id give it a go tonight, and below is my status quo after a long layoff..

http://youtu.be/TL69JY3acZs

my best attempt yet. done in double 1.25" leathers.

the crush needs some work (its been awhile). i plan on working with this until i get it under 2", then i'll work on thinner wraps.

hopefully no injuries this time.. word.

oh and my forearm cramped up on me there once and had be bouncin around like a little girl.. lol, dont hate.

Yeah man, very impressive. I have to say though, at least in my mind it seems like the double wraps might prevent you from actually getting within 2 inches. I'd imagine when it gets that close, they might get in the way too much, but I could be wrong.

Awesome power!

Every time you looked at the bar after you hit it...I was reminded of the scene where Apollo Creed looks in disbelief that Rocky was getting back up. Like...seriously Nail...you're not giving up? Now I have to beat you some more. :)

thanks Carl!

this bar really hurt my shoulder the first time i tried a few months back, and made me 'almost' give up DO bending forever.. i attempted one at the shop in IMP's and shop rags, and with a horrible "newb" form. (i got a little wobble in it then..)

i didnt have a clue how hard it was at the time, and learned the hard way.. but based off gym lifts compared to a couple months ago, and now. i think i (may) have been strong enough to do the same from the get go.. but just didnt have much technique to boot, along with too little wrapping.

anywho, being that the shoulder is feeling up to par, and recent events inspiring me to get back DO bending, i figured id start back on the goal bar i left off on to settle some unfinished bussiness. :cool

also, being that this thread has recieved nothing but positive feedback and some very motivational comments, i'll dubb this as my gold nail log. i'll post any progress i make on this bar here. word up.

Congrats on the progress Tommy!

thanks dewd

Consider that you're just getting back into DO I think you have a good shot at certing this in 2013. That is if you if you stay clear of injuries.

thanks brotha. ...but i wont lie.. i wrapped one up in IMP's last night just to get a "feel", and it felt so impossible it wasnt even funny.. i wont make claims of aiming at a cert yet, but do have intentions of bending one in single leathers in the months (maybe even years) to come.

as the crush is where i need most work, i did a bunch of ISO's today on the same gold in the above vid.

after a small warmup with some pushups and some levering with an 8lb sledge, i did somewhere near 15 solid ISO's (i think.. i wasnt really counting as i almost passed out a couple times)

each hit lasted anywhere between 8 or 10 seconds at max effort a.k.a. whole body was trembling towards the end of each hit. between hits i took about a full minute break to stretch and wiggle the cramps out.

i decided i was spent and gave up for the night when my chest, shoulders, and triceps felt like i did about 500 reps on the bench.. ISO's are pretty friggin taxing!

today, the bar did not budge.. not even a little. so i plan to do the same next week. ...and the week after, and the week after that if need be, until it falls!

i want this bar BAD!

okay my gold nail sits collecting dust. i realize now that i must train easier stock on my crush and work up to crushing the gold. that said, i made a point to pick up some 80D timber spikes yesterday from the local hardware store. i figured i could still bend long stock at 3/8" with some slightly easier steel with these bars.. to my surprise, these things werent that easy.. these are mostly bent braced. but here is my pr bend for the night.

got with Eric last night and did some AW'ing, bending, grip stuff, and messed around with some feats.

Eric has recently gotten with mighty Joe and is honing his technique on the table. one session with Joe, and Eric was smashing my arm and wrist alll over the place! SHEESH. im gonna have to get with Joe as well.. lol

on the bending, since ive been messing with the horse shoes a lot, i tried some new shoes. didnt finish any of the monster shoes that the guys from the Benders Battlefield recommended.. but did tag team some shoes in IMP's with Eric. we ended up finishing a DC2 into a heart barehanded.... barehanded... barehanded. :cool

Eric had some 3/8" hot rolled stock laying around that we cut down into an 8" piece. (with a gold in mind) i bent it in single leathers measuring right at an inch (smaller than IMP's, but a tad more rigid). this was a pr for me at 8". smashed it to parallel in the wraps, then ditched the wraps and took turns trying to make the ends touch barehanded.. barehanded! while it would flex just enough for the ends to touch but they wouldnt stay put. we then got crazy and went on to scroll that piece into a mangled "pigtail" looking thing.. it looked ridiculous when we got done with it! :laugh

bent a couple 3/8" spikes braced, and then tag teamed a 10 inch spike until it snapped.. (this was some hella cardio)

then we broke out the coins and bent a few penny's in our teeth. and i finally had the nutz to try and bend a quarter in my teeth and got that as well. ...this was after a few beers.

lol, good times!

btw, there is a method to the madness with the barehanded stuff.. if anyone is going to bend a gold in IMP's, its gonna be someone not only with the strength, but conditioned hands as well.

Good times, good times. But, you're too kind, T-Man, your hook is unstoppable!

It's truly amazing what one can accomplish, or more accurately, attempt, after six beers. Lol.
